Warner Bros. Pictures has released the first picture of Brad Pitt as Jesse James in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, coming to theaters in 2006.

The movie tells the story of how Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) joined Jesse James' (Pitt) gang, only to become resentful of the legendary outlaw and hatch a plan to kill James, the fastest gun in the West.

Sam Shepard and Mary Louise Parker are also starring in the action-western, directed by Andrew Dominik and written by Ron Hansen.

I was working in a screenplay that was about the Fords and Jesse James a few years ago (I still write a couple of pages every now and again) that was a little bit different.

My idea was that working backwards from what happens to both Bob and Charlie Ford after Bob shoots James in the back (while he's straightening a picture on a wall) it might tell a different story than Bob being "resentful."

Turns out that Bob Ford killed himself and Bob was gunned down by a Jesse James "fan." In my idea I look at the possibility that maybe Bob wasn't resentful at all--Jesse had taken him under his wing and given him respect and attention that he'd never really gotten from anyone before--especially his brother Charlie. So, when he joins the James Gang, he loves it. He loves Jesse. But, Bob gets resentful that he's no longer the "coolest guy in the room" to Bob. It's Charlie that manipulates his brother into killing James.

My cousin auditioned for the part of Bob Ford in this movie. He didn't get it as he lost out to Casey Affleck, Ben's younger brother.

Looks good, nonetheless.

Jesse James was a criminal, with many of the "accolades" bestowed upon him (fastest gun, "heroic", etc.) being done so after his death in the great myth making machine. There is even some strong evidence that it wasn't James who was shot that day in 1882, and that he might have lived until 1942.

I tire of this kind of western (Young Guns, etc.) which attempt to make punk-outlaws into some kind of heroes. There was nothing heroic about these guys. They were not Robin Hood.

Waste of film here, methinks.

Where is this even playing? Says it was released Friday but it is playing nowhere on the eastern seaboard. You would think a Brad Pitt movie would be a nationwide release.

You should really read the book that this movie is based on. This doesn't glamorize James, as much as it just tells the story of what really went on.

If you don't like to read, the History Channel did a show about it, too.

www.fandango.com shows it in New York...I didn't search for other cities, though.

Edit: Also found it playing out here in LA.

Absolutely loved this movie. I thought that both Brad Pitt and Casey Afleck were fantastic in this movie. A must see if you have not already.
