I just watched this and it was meh.

Affleck was good. But IMO Sam Rockwell stole every scene he was in. Pitt's performance was easy. The only time he seemed to give any effort, IMO, was to channel his character from 12 Monkeys.

Did enjoy seeing the aftermath of the Ford brothers' lives after the murder though.

I liked this movie. Good Western, sort of an anti-western. Some of the parts were a bit too "art filmy" and Nick Cave's score was a bit annoying, but I thought the movie ended strongly.

Overall, I grew to like Pitt's performance. He could have been a bit more consistent, but I think it came together well. The way he played James added to Affleck's performance.

Question: How was Affleck nominated for best supporting actor? His character was one of the leads, for sure.

Just my opinions. Either way, definitely a good rental movie.

Well... THERE'S 160 minutes I'll never get back.

Good point: Sam Rockwell.

Bad points : Waaaaaaayyyyyy too long. Could have been done in 100 minutes. They couldn't help but mystify James' character... and the death scene was way too much.

Mostly, the movie was like watching milk sour.

Funny, I was just thinking about watching this again. The long parts were just good opportunities for restroom and food breaks. :)

... or naps...

In fairness, I thought the movie overall was well-made. All the period stuff, especially the towns, seemed right on. The fillm had the "tinny" feeling to it which, I felt, worked.

But then... there was the rest of the movie....

Recently watched it. Loved it. I'm a fan of long slow movies, as long as they have a fascinating story to tell, which this definitely was. So much of the acting was done without even speaking, I really enjoy that. The cinematography was awesome. I loved the way they mixed the huge wide snowy scenes with the close-up dark room scenes.

The original cut of "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" was nearly four hours long. It was edited down to two hours and forty minutes, its current runtime, at the studio's request. However, it did play at least once at its original 4-hour length, most notably at the Venice Film Festival, where Brad Pitt picked up the Best Actor Award. After the viewing, critics at the festival labeled the film as "majestic."

I would have liked to have seen that version.

Jesse James was a criminal, with many of the "accolades" bestowed upon him (fastest gun, "heroic", etc.) being done so after his death in the great myth making machine. There is even some strong evidence that it wasn't James who was shot that day in 1882, and that he might have lived until 1942.

I tire of this kind of western (Young Guns, etc.) which attempt to make punk-outlaws into some kind of heroes. There was nothing heroic about these guys. They were not Robin Hood.

Waste of film here, methinks.

are you 126 years old? who cares how the movies portray these individuals now? i doubt most people consider young guns to be historical. i think most see these at tall tales.

I struggled to finish this movie. Really boring at times, though acting was really good, especially that guy who played Robert Ford. But I can't give it more than 2/4.
