I haven't looked it up, but I have a weird hunch that the first option is Stoudemire after the All-Star break.

Yup actually the only player to average more than 10FTA per game post allstar game except Iverson who played only 9 games and shot under 35% in those.

He also had the 4th best ppg average trailing TMac, Kobe and Carter only.

What the heck?

This is one of the biggest wastes of a poll I've ever seen! ;)

Perhaps there is a contest for the most inexplicable poll. Already we have a front runner.

Are you going to give us an idea of the formula you used to come up with these lists?

It’s a combination of efficiency and total output. Basically, I took the total number of points scored by each player, and subtracted a certain multiple of his FGA and a certain multiple of his FTA.

Actually, I think the coefficients I used were probably too high, and hence put too much emphasis on efficiency. Guys like James Posey and Brent Barry are highly efficient role players, but probably should not be counted among the league’s best scorers; at the other end of the spectrum, it’s probably unfair to count Allen Iverson, LeBron James, and Jermaine O’Neal among the league’s worst.

Here’s a rerun of the analysis, with more reasonable coefficients:

Best
1. Peja Stojakovic
2. Kevin Garnett
3. Dirk Nowitzki
4. Sam Cassell
5. Corey Maggette
6. Michael Redd
7. Richard Jefferson
8. Yao Ming
9. Mike Bibby
10. Tracy McGrady

Worst
1. J.R. Bremer
2. Michael Ruffin
3. Tom Gugliotta
4. Darko Milicic
5. Milt Palacio
6. Britton Johnsen
7. Dahntay Jones
8. Reece Gaines
9. Jeff Trepagnier
10. Anthony Carter

I'd like to see the exact formulas because you came up with radically different casts.

In your first you listed Hayes as one of the ten worst. Since he averaged an even 40% (weak but far from the worst), I was wondering how the rating worked that did not include Eisley.

One comment, it seems obvious from the ranking that guys who are responsible for scoring a lot of points on teams without a balanced attack tend to rank very low. Supporting guys on teams with other big scorers are likely to rank pretty high.

Brent Barry does not shoot very much, but hits 50.4% of what he shoots (45.2% for three). I have never understood why the Sonics don't develop more of a multiple screen offense like the Pacers run for Reggie Miller. Instead, they rely on Allen 44% and Lewis 43.5% - who are both more scorers than pure shooters.

This season McGrady only shot 41.7% (he shot over 45% the previous four years) presumably because of weak support. Juwan Howard 17 ppg shot 45.3% and Drew Gooden 11.6 ppg shot 44.5%, which may be due to double teaming of T-Mac, but suggests maybe he should have passed more.

I'm not sure what I'm saying except that team situations would seem to be a very big component of any player's stats.
