Air Raid Warning!
I'm sorry but I just can't get that officials screw up out of my mind this morning. And no I'm not pinning the defeat on that. I mean you can't let someone go 91 yards untouched just when you gain some momentum. You can't give the ball to your softest player on a 4th and 2. yadda, yadda, yadda.
What is troubling about that call, is the bozo who over-ruled the original and correct call. What is the criteria for that anyway?
Even more troubling is that I just saw ESPN highlights of the Jets-Rayduhs game. Guess what, in a very similar situation, Justin McCariens makes a difficult catch in the endzone and the Ray-duh defender shoves him out of bounds while he is in the air. He lands with his legs spread just like Anquan, and one foot about 6 inches out of bounds. Other than Anquan's catch being slightly more difficult and not being in the end zone, the situations were almost identical. Oh, and one other difference, there was only official involved in the McCariens situation and he ruled a force-out and Jets touchdown.
To me when there is a difference between the officials on a critical call like that, there has to be a review option. And force-outs need to be reviewable, specially when there is a difference of opinion between the officials.
Other stuff:
1. TV guys commented on Reggie Swinton's hesitation on at least two different occasions on punt returns. On both, he had substanial running room, but seemed paralyzed by indecisiveness. As J.C. Pearson noted during the telecast, you can't hesitate for 2 or 3 seconds when the coverage team is bearing down on you. I hope Swinton isn't back next year. His late fumble recovered by the Cardinals only sealed his fate with me.
2. You gotta like the way this team, specially the defense, is giving their all on the field. Outstanding effort by the the likes of Karlos Dansby, James Darling, Adrian Wilson, Robert Griffith and company.
3. What is so difficult about lining up onside? If must be a challenge for Antonio Smith cause he did it again twice yesterday. This comes on top of several other bone-headed penalties he's committed in the last several games. Antonio, please give yourself a couple inches leeway when lining up. Your bone-headed offsides are annoying.
4. The game only confirmed the obvious needs going forward: Nose tackle, offensive line, short-yardage running back, kick returner and an offensive line coach. Those are the minimums.
