Uh...the fourth movie is moving along without Paul Greengrass or Matt Damon.

Title: The Bourne Legacy.

Story (according to director Tony Gilroy): "This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one’s replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter…this is a stand-alone project."

Hey, Tony - maybe it shouldn't be a "Bourne" movie then ... :doi:

Well, this is pretty lame. Why don't they just make a sequel to Speed without Keanu Reeves?

I really liked the first 2 (the 3rd was barely watchable IMO) and would have given a 4th movie a try if Damon returned but this holds no interest for me.

I'll stick with the new Eric Van Lustbader Bourne novels. Could never get in to Matt Damon as Bourne. The original. novel-based Bourne was a Vietnam-era special forces type (that's where the "identity" was created). Anyway, really hated that the new movies totally left out the Carlos character. Was so much more interesting when Bourne has lost his memory, Treadstone thinks he's turned, and the guy he was created to get, Carlos is also out to get him. Much better than the flicks IMO. Really like the 1988 Richard Chamerlain mini-series also, followed the book almost to the letter.

See, I'll have to disagree. I loved the original novels, but I'm all right with the newer movies. The cold war and Carlos the Jackal just aren't topical any more. I'd have loved to see it like that, but I can understand why they modernized it.

i think this is a case of a writer thinking they're a little TOO responsible for the success of the character, and I'm saying that as a writer myself.

A Bourne movie without Matt Damon as Jason Bourne sounds just as profitable as a Dumb and Dumber sequel without Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels... or a Mask sequel without Jim Carrey... etc., etc.,

Oh I have no issue with modernizing it. But to remove an important dynamic without replacing it with something else was a big letdown for me. The drama of Bourne basically being created to flush out another assasin, him even believing that maybe HE was Carlos. It really lacked not having Bourne under assault on two fronts IMO. They so could have kept the same dynamic without the cold-war, dated aspect.

Good point, but I thought Doug Liman did a pretty good job in the first movie--I'm not sure he could fit any other plot points into that film.

It really boils down to casting. If you cast some no-name in the Bourne role then this is straight-to-DVD material. However, audiences will still go see a solid action movie in the theater if it has a known lead--they will not go see a second-rate comedy sequel with nobodys.

this thing has cheap written all over it IMO.

what's really going to be fascinating is how the new Spidey does. Tobey Maguire wasn't a superstar, but he was pretty well know at the time he was cast and people definitely knew who Dafoe and the Green Goblin were before the first one came out. Coming so soon on the heels of a well established franchise with relative no-names (Garfield/Rhys-Ifans) and a MUCH scaled down budget, it'll be really interesting to see how that movie does.

I know this is the Bourne thread, but Spider-Man is an interesting one to bring up. I think even when the original Spider-Man came out, the "superhero movie" was in a different place. Back then, all the big superhero movies were huge properties like Spidey, Batman and Superman. Now, it's properties like Iron Man, the Green Lantern and that abomination Jonah Hex. I think the environment is a little different and I think critically, this movie will be scrutinized much more than the original simply because Spider-Man is such a huge franchise--this could be entering Superman Returns territory, which did have one big star (Kevin Spacey), but ultimately wasn't that good. And that movie had a decent director. The new one has... Marc Webb.

yeah, I really liked 500 Days Of Summer, but call me skeptical on Webb to produce a Spidey movie on a scale of what we've already seen.

Exactly. I just hope the Gwen Stacy character isn't as unlikable as Zooey was in 500 Days.

Kinda like how Ice Cube replaced Vin Diesel in the XXX series? Heh. GOLD!

http://www.deadline.com/2011/04/universal-chooses-jeremy-renner-for-the-bourne-legacy/

The search is over. Universal Pictures has formally offered Jeremy Renner the lead role in the Tony Gilroy-directed The Bourne Legacy. Renner, who has been nominated for Oscars the past two years for his work in The Hurt Locker and The Town, is expected to sign on quickly to play a new character in the spinoff film that begins production in September. Like the Jason Bourne character played by Matt Damon in the first three The Bourne Identity thrillers, Renner will play an operative from a covert government program that is even more dangerous than the Treadstone brainwashing program that hatched Bourne.

"Legacy" is written and directed by Tony Gilroy (who wrote all three of the "Bourne" screenplays and also wrote and directed "Michael Clayton") and is expected to start filming this September, with a release date around August 2012.
