Guys being timed in the forty without pads on and QBs chunking balls without shoulder pads on and don't forget guys running around little cones which can cause them no harm and won't move. To a trained scout they might glean something from this but it should be to compliment what one already has seen on game film and not drastically alter an opinion. Other than failing a physical or having a awful interview, any scouts who changes their opinion on players due to this flea circus needs to be checked. As far as fans playing 'I'm the GM', it should not matter... they are not picking the players. I do appreciate the stupidity of the combine because slow forty times of the Andre Ellingtons due to being injured allowed us to acquire them in a steal in later rounds :)

It serves its purpose, but IMO if a GM or scout puts more than a 10 or 20% of his evaluation on a player because of the combine he's making a mistake. Mike Mamula...cough cough :p The tape usually doesn't lie.

It is a piece of the puzzle, no more, no less. I don't know why anyone takes it as anything more that that. When you take it as an athletic showcase, you either confirm what you already know or have a reason to go back and re-look at a player. The NFL Draft highly values potential and one thing fans struggle with is that college production is not a predictor of pro success. There are certain measurables and athletic numbers which predict pro production much more accurately. Again, the combine isn't the answer but it is a huge part of it.

The interview process is more important to most teams than the actual numbers.

You guys all sum up pretty much what I'm getting at, it confirms ones preset opinions and the interview process of course affords what the tape cannot... though I'm sure the teams know a player can act his way through a interview in a controlled environment. It is those who act like the times and drills have a huge impact on the player that make me chuckle :)
