The Deer Hunter is a 1978 war drama film about a trio of Rusyn American[1] steel worker friends and their infantry service in the Vietnam War. It is loosely inspired by the German novel Three Comrades (1937), by World War I veteran Erich Maria Remarque, the author of All Quiet on the Western Front, which follows the lives of a trio of World War I veterans in 1920s Weimar Germany. Like the novel, The Deer Hunter meditates and explores the moral and mental consequences of war violence and politically-manipulated patriotism upon the meaning of friendship, honor, and family in a tightly-knit community and deals with controversial issues such as drug abuse, suicide, infidelity and mental illness. The film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

The film stars Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, John Cazale and Meryl Streep. The story occurs in southern Vietnam, Pittsburgh and in working-class Clairton, Pennsylvania, a Monongahela River town south of Pittsburgh.

I am working my way through all of De Niro's 1970s films and really liked this movie. I am fascinated by John Cazale (Fredo from The Godfather). The guy starred in six films in his short career and all were nominated for Best Picture before his death due to cancer in 1978. The Deer Hunter is his final film and also stars his then-girlfriend Meryl Streep.

Christopher Walken is awesome and the Russian Roulette scenes used in this movie have been used in many other movies and shows.

2nd half fantastic.

Really? I liked the wedding stuff and the hunting trip. I guess it as a little long, but I thought it set up all the characters nicely.

I remember reading about that, crazy stuff.

I've seen this twice, liked it even more the second time.

Back to The Deer Hunter: I would give it a C+.

It was overrated when it won the Oscar. IMO, Midnight Express should have won Best Picture in 1978. I also thought that Coming Home and even Heaven Can Wait were better than The Deer Hunter that year.

Completely agree. Hollywood loved the misery and thus rewarded it. Similar to anointing Reds and Ordinary people. I remember leaving the theater wondering why I bothered to pay money to go home feeling miserable.

Saw all the others you mentioned and liked them all except I'd rank Heaven Can Wait below the rest.

I thought it was an A because although it had severe flaws, it is a movie that has stuck with me and haunted me for thirty years. Midnight Express was another one like that but it was all based on texture; the others mentioned were just OK and very Hollywoodish.

I agree. I haven't seen this movie for about 15 years or so and I still remember parts of it very clearly.

I have to agree that I like that Best Picture nominees of 1978 better than 2008.
