Leinart obviously played job-scared and let the pressure get to him. He may have missed the throws by 10 yards, but that doesn't mean he woke up and couldn't play anymore. He was tight and aiming the ball & didn't want to go 3-and-out. Once the first pass was picked off it got worse.
But you are really letting three throws of a preseason game take too much importance. It's over, you guys. Let the man try to rebound in the next game and see where we go from there. I missed the part in the rulebook where a bad throw in preseason equals a horrible season/career forthcoming. Kurt Warner was cut in preseason once or twice, wasn't he?
Warner forces the ball a lot, every game, but we don't carefully dissect each of his interceptions, especially in preseason. I stand by my conviction that Warner can throw for more yards than Leinart, but is not as coachable and does not protect the football. If you take away the injury/fatigue factor and the consistently forced balls, I would agree that Warner the best guy between the two right now.
Russ, I'm not sure you see a lot of throws in the NFL anymore where the receiver just beats the DB by three yards by sprinting past them. With Cover 2 a team can keep your receivers in front of them as long as they choose to (and are willing to give up the space underneath). I think completing the long ball in this day & age is a matter of well-placed balls by the QB and the WR's winning the physical/jump battle.
Boldin and Fitz don't have great track speed, but they do have superb functional speed and vertical jumps. If we get our QB in a rhythm and wear down a defense, the big plays will happen naturally.
