I guess we should remove this forum from the "Arizona Teams" forum
Why? The Coyotes team name is held now by the NHL and any expansion team would have the opportunity to use it for a future team. This forum can be used to discuss the search for land for a possible arena, getting an expansion team, following players on the former Yotes team now in Utah, the NHL in general, etc. Technically, they are only on hiatus.

If you'd rather not look here - don't look here.

Plus the team that left is no longer the Coyotes. Right now there is no team. Just a wish. If they do come back, some people are suggesting we should start fresh with a new name.

Let me try to contain my excitement.

We went from committed to building a winner in AZ to adios in like nine Scaramucci's.

That's sure as spit some impressive ownership.
Getting rid of Meruelo is the best possible thing that could happen for hockey in the valley.

I'd understand if he bolted with the team to Utah but to sell the franchise and then relinquish the rights to the league so quickly shows how shady this guy is. Ultimately it's probably for the best he's gone. I wouldn't want to support a team owned by someone like him who has one foot out the door already.

The minute I see a Phoenix team on the NHL schedule, I'll agree with you. Until then, it just sucks.

I still am in shock that after everything, nearly 30 years of on-ice failure, we have to watch the team finally bear fruit in freakin' Utah.

I'm just not confident there is anyone that can make it work here other than Ishbia, and I don't see him needing a NHL team in his portfolio for the advertised investment it would require.

I am starting to doubt he really was a billionaire. With all the problems he had running a business at the most basic level, and the cash flow problems he had, I really doubt someone with this issues could be a billionaire.

Unfortunately, it seems he retains his ownership over the Roadrunners and has plans to move them to Reno, NV as a last F U to AZ. That sucks.
Having lived up in Reno, the people up there would really support the Rodarunners. It really does suck for Tucson because all I have ever read is the fans there have always been loyal to the team.

I am thinking it would have to be someone like Wayne Gretzky wanting to own a team with a group of deep pockets to make it work. I feel like some hockey owners aren't really hockey fans. It's just a way to own a sports team when that can't get a baseball, basketball, or football team. Was Meruelo even ever a real fan of hockey? I don't remember reading where he ever referred to have watched hockey growing up, could name any players, or even said he had a favorite team he liked to watch.

Something seems off. I haven't dug that deep but I hope someone is writing a book on all the happenings. There's been some questionable moves and I'd like to hear what really went down.

As a casual fan, I still can't wrap my head around the issues in Glendale. Everything they wanted was there yet that couldn't be salvaged and seemingly was never mentioned as a fall back either. Now there's an 16k seat arena built for hockey that is collecting dust.

ISHBIA:

“I’m definitely going to be part of the community, and if I can help bring hockey back, I’ll look at that,” he said. “It’s definitely something I’m interested in. It’s a four-sport town. I’m disappointed we don’t have a hockey team, but I understand what happened, and we’re going to try to fix that one day.”.......

“I’m disappointed we don’t have a hockey team here. That’s what I’ll say,” he said. “Phoenix is a four-sport town. Maybe five if you want to include soccer, but it’s a four-sports town. Baseball, football, basketball and hockey. And I hope that one day we’ll be able to get hockey back.”.............

Ishbia believes a new downtown arena is in the city’s future, and there’s plenty of room south of the current facility to build it, which is just what the NHL wants.

:grabs:

Considering everything that led to the Coyotes' demise, I really believe the only way it works in Phoenix is if the NBA and NHL are housed in the same building and owned by the same, extremely wealthy, person. So many of the headwinds are alleviated with that potent combo.

I think that's one of the only ways a new arena is built downtown to replace AWA/USAC/TSRA or whatever awful name the arena has now. Too much has been spent on renovations for that building to be left vacant and it's an excellent location. In about a decade the Suns will likely start seeking more renovations or a new arena though. If it brought the NHL back then I can see it being mode favorable amongst the community.
