Superhero Green Hornet may fly again in film
By Steve Gorman
Tue Mar 20, 2007

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -
The Green Hornet, a classic crime-fighting hero from radio, TV and comic books, may fly again on the big screen.

Columbia Pictures has acquired film rights to the masked character for a feature film about the daring newspaper publisher who battles the underworld by night with the help of his loyal sidekick, Kato, the studio said on Tuesday.

No casting decisions have been made and no director or screenwriters are yet connected with the project, a spokesman for the Sony Corp-owned studio told Reuters.

Columbia is the same distributor behind the blockbuster "Spider-Man" film franchise based on the web-spinning Marvel Comics hero. "Spider-Man 3" is due out in May.

"I couldn't be more thrilled to be developing this world renowned property with the people who brought Spider-Man to the screen," Green Hornet producer Neal Moritz said in a statement.

Introduced by Russian composer Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumble Bee," "The Green Hornet" debuted as a radio show in January 1936 on WXYZ in Detroit. He had been created by the station's George Trendle and Fran Striker, who also invented the Lone Ranger.

The story centered on the adventures of playboy Britt Reid, who inherits his father's crusading newspaper, the Daily Sentinel, which he uses to expose organized crime in the city.

Adopting the secret guise of the Green Hornet, Reid takes to the streets to personally battle criminals by night in his supercharged car, the Black Beauty, driven by his faithful companion, Kato, a master of martial-arts.

The radio series ran until 1952 on the Mutual and NBC Blue networks before the Green Hornet began appearing in comic books.

The story of the masked crime-fighter, armed with special weapons that could subdue his foes with a knock-out gas or an electric shock (the "hornet's sting"), also was made into two movie serials during the 1940s.

But the Green Hornet is best remembered by baby boomers for the 1966-1967 ABC television series that starred Van Williams as the title character and Bruce Lee as Kato.

"It was my favorite show as a kid," said Moritz, who bought rights to the project from the families of Striker and Trendle. "It's a dream come true for me."

He said the film would be updated to contemporary times but follow the original mythology of the character.

Rogen to Write and Star in Green Hornet
Source: Los Angeles Times
July 19, 2007

The Los Angeles Times is reporting the unconfirmed news that Knocked Up star Seth Rogen has signed a deal to write and likely star in The Green Hornet for Columbia Pictures:

Neal H. Moritz is developing the project with Rogen via the producer's Original Film company. Moritz has been chasing the rights for years having been a big fan of the '60s television series. He declined to comment on Rogen's involvement.

Rogen's deal was confirmed to the Los Angeles Times by a number of sources both inside and outside the studio, who are involved with the film. Sony is said to be eyeing a 2009 release. Sony president of production Matt Tolmach is expected to oversee for Columbia Pictures.

Stephen Chow, one of Asia's most popular box-office draws as the award-winning star and director of such films as Kung Fu Hustle, CJ7, and Shaolin Soccer, will direct Seth Rogen and star opposite him as Kato in Columbia Pictures' The Green Hornet, set for release June 25, 2010, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, presidents of Columbia Pictures. The screenplay is by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, who will also executive produce. Neal H. Moritz is the producer through his Original Film production company.

I've got to admit, I'm intrigued. I want to see how Rogan plays this character. I'm hoping it's not badly.

Anything with Seth is good. Anything with Jack Black is GREAT

Let's see...Jack Black as Hamlet? Not a snowball's chance. Seth Rogan as Abraham Lincoln? Nope. Unless they're spoofs, which is not what I'm saying. So, no, I don't think anyone will really agree with what you're trying to say. Love Seth Rogen as an actor, but don't want him to portray a superhero like this.

Really? It's not like the Green Hornet is a mainstay of superhero lore. I'm a comic book geek and I don't know anyone who even really knows the first thing about him other than he rides around in the backseat of car in the dark a lot.

It was a frightening thought when Jack Black was attached to the Green Lantern, but the Green Hornet? I'd rather seen it played as a comedy, I think.

According to Variety, Columbia Pictures is in early talks with Nicolas Cage to play the gangster villain in The Green Hornet.

Cameron Diaz is negotiating to play a reporter and love interest in the Michel Gondry-directed film that stars Seth Rogen as the masked crime fighter.

The picture is moving full steam ahead for a fall start date, even as the studio looks to replace Stephen Chow, who was going to play sidekick Kato. Rogen and Evan Goldberg wrote the script and Neal Moritz is producing through his Original Films.

The Green Hornet is targeting a July 9, 2010 release

Jay Chou, the singer-actor and a star throughout Asia, has joined the cast of Michel Gondry's The Green Hornet in the iconic role of Kato, it was announced today by Columbia Pictures.

Gondry said, "Jay is incredibly unique and charming and fights like a wild dog! When I filmed him next to Seth, they had such great chemistry, and I knew the movie will be great."

Chou added, "It's an overwhelming experience to take on a role made famous by Bruce Lee. I won't try to be Bruce Lee's Kato – I will try to bring my own interpretation to the part. Of course, it's a dream role, and I'm looking forward to the challenge."

For there being like 1.5 billion Chinese, there are only like 6 of them in Hollywood. I'm glad they're branching out a bit

The Green Hornet

Anybody have opinions on this new one coming out? I do not remember too much about the hornet from when I was a kid,...just Cato kicking butt.
But it surprised me to see Seth Rogen as the Hornet.... I am a big fan of Seth, loved Zach and Miri make a porno, and Pineapple Express has to be the best pot head movie made since Cheech and Chong,....I laughed away about ten pounds of ass watching that,...and no, I was not stoned.
Was Green Hornet always a comedy show?

No. On television, Batman was more of a comedy and The Green Hornet was pure action-adventure.

I like the trailer for this film though. :D

Thanks for the merge, I didnt see this thread....I am looking forward to this one.

The preview makes the movie look awful. I am having bad feelings that this movie is going to be a huge waste of time.

I liked it. Figured it would be a silly film but thought it was legitimately funny at parts with decent action. The villain probably could have been better, but since it's the guy that played Landa in the Inglorious Basterds I gave him a pass.
