Plot Summary: Jerry Ferro's (Adam Carolla) 40th birthday has brought his life into sharp relief and it's not a pretty picture. A once-promising amateur boxer -- who quit so he wouldn't risk his perfect record of underachievement -- Jerry has been knocking around from one construction job to another and spinning his wheels in an unsatisfying relationship, all the while with an eye toward eventually getting his **** together. His last connection to the fight game is the evening boxing class he teaches to middle-aged, middle class, middle management types at a gym in Pasadena, where he also works as a handyman. When venerable boxing coach Eddie Bell (Tom Quinn) asks Jerry if he'd like to spar a couple of rounds with Malice Blake (Harold House Moore), an up-and-coming pro, Jerry reluctantly steps into the ring. Despite the ass-kicking Jerry otherwise receives, a one-punch knockdown of Blake convinces Jerry that it¹s time to make his return to competitive boxing. Thus ends a 20-year layoff and begins a hilarious fish-out-water quest for Olympic gold.

The Hammer is comedy film starring Adam Carolla and Heather Juergensen. Carolla portrays Jerry Ferro, a retired amateur boxer. Approaching forty, Ferro is unsatisfied with his life as a construction worker and part-time boxing instructor in Los Angeles. After a successful bout with a young pro boxer, Ferro decides to don the gloves one last time. The movie recounts his unlikely quest for Olympic gold. Along the way he receives encouragement from his friend and co-worker, Oswaldo Sánchez (Oswaldo Castillo), and love interest Lindsay Pratt (Juergensen). Ferro’s life is based on Adam Carolla’s real experiences as a construction worker in L.A.

I am a huge Adam Carolla fan and put a rubber stamp on pretty much anything Carolla, Kimmel, Silverman and Bill Simmons have to do with, but this is a good movie that is AT LEAST worth your rental. It has a lot of heart and definitely isnt a gross-out comedy or anything like that.

Carolla and (Bill Simmons' pal and Fox Sports writer) Kevin Hench wrote, filmed, editted, etc the movie and shopped it around for a couple of years. It is loosly based on Adam's real life as a construction worker/boxing instructor, which is what he did until he was in his early 30s.

After numerous rejections from studios for being a "tweener" movie (is it a comedy? is it a boxing movie? is it a date movie?), Carolla and gang self-financed the distribution, got it into Tribeca and got the Weinsteins to agree to handle the forthcoming DVD release. The film is lighthearted, although it received an R rating for two f words. Since they didnt have the money to fight the MPAA machine, an R it is. This movie is truely a labor of love for all involved and I had a cool feeling in the theater watching the movie.

The movie grossed $97,137 on 20 screens in its first week (March 21-23, 2008).

In its second week (March 28-30, 2008), the film expanded to 34 theaters and had box office totals of $104,803).

It looks like the movie is no longer showing in Phoenix, so I am glad I saw it opening weekend.

Ebert and Roper At the Movies gave it two thumbs up and the footage is on YouTube.

At a minimum the best comedy/date-movie out right now.

The movie was great, laughed throughout...it had a very sweet side so even the women will love it. There is no crude childish humor, and some of the scenes are just flat out hilarious. The toggle bolts was great...so was 37mph.

Never mind, just answered my question LOL Maybe I'll have to give it a look-see, if it ever gets to me.

It's definitely worth it and NOT what you'd expect by an "Adam Carolla" movie. This would be a great date movie too, some very touching scenes, and an ending that surprises and can make even dudes emotional.

That sucks it is already out of the theater in Phoenix. I am suprised that Harkins Camelview isn't carrying it since that theater carries the off beat stuff.

Yeah, no kidding.

AMC Deer Valley had it opening weekend on two screens and two other local theaters had it too.

I regret not starting it sooner. :(

They had $0 for advertising since it wasnt a studio film and self-financed.
