Marion has a great set of skills, but not for a max player. Diaw creates more matchup problems than marion and is a better defender down low because hes stronger and smarter down there than shawn. I actually like Diaw, unlike many posters here who are frustrated with him. As I posted months ago, Diaw will be a key piece of the suns if they expect to contend, and I believe that alot of the euro players are mnisunderstood by american basketball fans. Diaw is the second best post defender on the team behind shaq, and did a far better job on aldrige than amare in the portland game by limiting aldrige from getting to his favored spots. Is Diaw worth 9M/yr, not at his current production rate, but I havent given up on him yet. He may still improve as he settles in with his new teammates. WIth Bell out, I kind of like starting diaw at the '3' and putting hill at the '2'. This way giricek, LB and skinner can come off the bench.

i'm also a big fan of diaw. i like his game a lot better when we let him play to his strengths while not trying to make him something he's not. Diaw hasn't earned his huge pay day to this point, but it really only takes one game to turn things around. if he helps us to a ring, he has earned that 9 mil.

Get rid of tanking by getting rid of the draft and salary cap. Just let teams sign college players as free agents.

i hope to god that was a joke

i think the best way to fix the draft is to reverse draft order it. give the team who just barely missed the playoffs the #1 pick, and likewise the worst team the #15 or whatever pick it is.

sure it wouldnt be perfect, but it would surely make the entire season competitive and reward a team for almost making it.

would definitely for teams to better manage themselves and you wouldnt see meatheads like Isiah running teams or blatant tanking.

This is the worst idea ever.

I've heard this idea before, and I while I like the thought process, I'm not sure I would go for it. It does seem to me that a lot of times, teams get stuck in a rut of mediocrity (i.e. Kidd era Suns), always making the playoffs, but not good enough to go far, but not getting high picks either. A system like you're suggesting would help them, but I'd worry that bad teams would never be able to get better (or, it would be far too difficult).

Poor Shawn. He goes to a team that is tanking so it can get a new SF. And they already have a PF, so I assume that means Shawn gets to start at C next year.

I have a problem with Riley taking leave to watch prospects. The guy only wants to coach when he has a good team.

Riley has earned it. It's the end of the season. Team is tanking for picks. Let him sit courtside and watch his new superstar blossom. Whoever the hell it might be.

No salary cap? Man. Mavs would just make this situation stuuuupid!

Not a bad idea. Regardless the worst team has a nice trading piece at #15 to work themselves further down.

What about this: Worst team, 1st pick. 2nd worst record, 2nd pick. (You get it.) If a team tanks it, it has its sponsers, fans, and media to deal with. Let that be the punishment. I'm all for tanking.

Tank away Heat. Not much different for Marion, he always took the playoffs off.

When healthy, the heat really shouldn't be such a bad team. Their starting lineup could actually be pretty good.

Williams
Wade
Marion
Haslem
(Insert center here).

That's a pretty good team on both ends, inside and out. They also have an excellent coach. They really shouldn't be that bad.

Then you might have teams gunning for "just missing the playoffs".

I like the current system. Even if you tank for the worst record, you only have a 25% chance of getting the top pick.

Why not just give every lottery team the same chance at the #1? For teams that make the playoffs, give them 1/4th the chance that the lottery teams have.

So, each lottery team has the same amount of "ping pong balls." The playoff teams have the same amount as each other, but 1/4th of what the lottery teams have.

This would completely randomize the draft. But does it actually work?

I just want to point out one thing. Remember how we all lauded for Shawn for his duarability and willingness to bring his hart hat and lunch pail every game.

Well apparently we are all products of our environment. Shawn is sitting out tonights game with "back spasms".

What a joke? I am hoping he is loving the night life and the latina hotties cuz his basketball career all of a sudden seems to be circling the drain.

Will be interesting to see where this goes from here....

^Who knows though, maybe the organization told him "hey Shawn, your back is spasm-ing, right, RIGHT?" They want the worst record they can get, so who knows.

Yeah but it could also drive Marion's value down if he opts out this summer. If he went out and scored 30pts/gm & 10+rebs/gm for the rest of the season then he might actually get a big contract that he wants. I guess if he went out there and sucked then that would drive his value down too.

it seems like the heat and marion had reached an implicit agreement for him to stay in miami so whatever value is left of marion would not matter. riley the gm has named his next year's "core" (if i'm not mistaken) as wade, marion, cook, haslem and dorell wright. it's probable that the team doesn't want to risk marion having a major injury in a hopeless season, hence the "back spasm" (of course, tanking is part of that too)

I think an easy immediate solution right now is to just work the number of current ping pong balls per team. Instead of their being such a HUGE difference between the number the worst team and the 8th worst team, even it out a little bit--not 50/50, but at least give those other teams a better chance to get that pick. That probably won't alleviate teams from trying to tank, but it might also mean having the worst record in the league doesn't automatically guarantee you the #1 pick.

it's not perfect. the 'weak' teams will remain weak. however, it's the only strategy that makes sense to me. for a franchise to self destruct their team is shameless. sure it's for the better but what about the season ticket holders and lp subscribers. the least you want to see after paying gazillion dollars is your team losing by 50 or have a total of 20 wins in an entire season...

Dont worry, David Stern will punish the team by screwing them in the lottery. Dont believe me?? Look what happened to Memphis last season. And dont forget the "Frozen Envelope"

Your head coach and gm leaves the team and goes to watch draft eligible college players. Before he leaves he lists the personnel that will be starters next year. Most of them suddenly discover injuries and are benched. Tanking? Of course, they're not going anywhere this year. But, boy, watch them climb the ladder next year with their high picks.
