Giamatti Joins Norton in The Illusionist
Source: Variety
February 10, 2005

Paul Giamatti will star opposite Edward Norton in director Neil Burger's The Illusionist, reports Variety. The movie will reunite him with his Sideways producer, Michael London.

"Illusionist" is the story of a magician in turn-of-the-century Vienna who falls in love with a woman who becomes engaged to a prince. He then uses his powers to win her back and undermine the stability of the royal house of Vienna.

Burger also adapted the screenplay from Steven Millhauser's short story, "Eisenheim the Illusionist." The film is scheduled to begin production April 1 in Prague.

Giamatti will follow The Illusionist with Kieran and Michelle Mulroney's Paper Man.

They should just remake Magic. "Magic is fun.....when you're dead."

Ooh man, I hated that commercial.

 And Norton doesn't?

I dunno...it could be a flop, but it certainly sounds interesting. I might just have to watch it...er, that is, if I find the time or money Lol Haven't even seen Hotel Rwanda yet

I didn't say anything about Edward Norton. Granted, that's strange also, but Giamatti to me always seemed like the goofy everyman type--the Woody Allen of the new millenium. Of course, even Woody did a period piece, so what do I know? :)

I don;t think Norton in a period peice sounds strange at all. Also, I have little doubt that Giamatti will pull it off.

Sounds interesting.

he totally fits Chap - you gotta read the script... oh and this movie will make NO money whatsoever. It's not a movie the general public is going to rush out to see.

Hmm...all good points. I'm wondering how Norton will do in that upcoming Crusade movie. You know, the one that'll probably have really good parts but will end up sucking because Orlando Bloom's playing a knight as the lead Lol

Like I said, I'm interested to see how this movie ends up. I'm just sad that the one movie, 'A Very Long Engagement', I think it was called, never ended up near me. Looked killer.

everyone I know said it was beautiful to look at, when you weren't looking at your watch for the fifth time - WAYYYYY too long and slow for most people's tastes - even cinefiles.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jessica Biel and Rufus Sewell have joined the cast.

I just watched it. Norton and Giamatti were outstanding and the Oscar nomination for Cinematography is well deserved. I loved the ending. This is one that I’ll probably watch again when it comes on HBO.

One of my sexy female mormon friends lives in my house. This has been documented in EE in numerous threads.
That's why I suggested you might be watching your roomate tonight.

My attempt at humor came up lame. All is well in the universe.

Watched this last night...I liked it, but I felt the end wasn't a suprise at all and thus a letdown.

I did think the style and cinematography was amazing.

Paul Giamatti was awesome.

The movie was pretty good but ...

The ending kinda sucked. Too Hollywood.

How did Giamatti suddenly realize the whole thing was a work? Or was that just thrown there just to tie up the film and give us a happy ending?

Why not just let Norton get on the train and Giamatti never know the truth until he gets the book featuring the orange tree trick?
