At this point, I'm not confident that he knows what he is doing. Conventional wisdom is that when playing a rookie, you want to pressure him to make quick decisions and take away his easy throws and options.

Against Brissett, we aren't blitzing and are allowing Doyle to convert easy receptions.

In a defense that is based upon players who are positionless, we are running predictable defenses and counting on players to win one on one matchups. We have an undersized defensive line, and are trying to bull rush plays. We have S who we are leaving in coverage mismatches because we can't generate pressure.

I know this is not new, but I wanted to vocalize my issues with Bettcher. I think he is one of the worst DCs in the NFL, and our defense is paying the proce for it.

I agree with you - this is his third year and he seems to be getting worse - lack of adjustments and just not a good feel for what the other team is doing.

I'm also starting to wonder how bad are we at recognizing OL talent...

Wrong to say that he's one of the worst, but there are a few small tactical things he can get better at. Bettcher is not someone I'm looking at when I think of the reasons this team looks sluggish.

I really hate seeing Bathea playing deep Safety.

Again? Why are any of you claiming the D has issues. The offense is the one that looks horrible. D is on the field why to long and that's the offense's fault. Stop claiming this is the D or the coache's issues, when clearly it's not.

It was good to see B. Baker out there at the end of the game making plays. He brings a speed demension that is lacking on the back end. Very encouraging going forward. I'm still optomistic. Nkemdiche needs to take the next step. Muro had a decent game and some good penetration.

Speaking of how did Nkemdiche do today?

I don't agree

I think some of the Cards D issues vs backup QBs historically is that heavy blitzes often produce easy pre snap reads

At the end of the day: absent another ST gaffe, the D gave up 3 FGs

Just because the defense is better than the offense doesn't mean it is playing to it's personnel. We gave up 10 first Q points against the worst roster in the NFL starting Jacoby Brissett. 8-18 allowed on 3rd down following a week where the Rams forced them to go 0-10. We have as much invested in our defense as they have in theirs.

Our defense should have dominated today, and it didn't. That is a problem regardless of what the offense is doing.

Nkemdiche got pulled after a stupid penalty. He's got talent but he's a loose cannon at this point. He made zero impact today. The problem with blitzing more is you want Brissett in the pocket. I think a contrioled rush was best. If Gunter doesn't get that careless penalty (a point of emphasis this year) they only score 9 points. How good does the D have to be? Indy had 33 minutes of possession to the Cards 28.

True, but football is a mental sport as well as a physical one. I bet, if the offense drove down and scored a TD, or even a FG, the D would have come out more into the game. I bet alot of the D saw how bad the O played and wasn't as mentally into the game as they would have.

That is a good point. They just might have been a bit more inspired if the O even remotely looked as if they could win this game. Hopefully not but it is human nature.

I have to question any scheme that has our best pass rusher in coverage against the other team's WR.

This defense lost CC, Jefferson and DJ Swearinger this off season. That's not on Betcher

His defense gives up way too many TD's. (insert sarcasm)

You are right. It is completely acceptable for an elite defense to give up 5 scoring drives to Brian Hoyer with Pierre Garcon and a banged up Carlos Hyde at home. Especially when every one of those drives took the game from a tie to giving the 49ers the lead. (sarcasm already included)
