The Karate Kid

Release Date: June 11, 2010
Studio: Columbia Pictures (Sony)
Director: Harald Zwart
Screenwriter: Chris Murphy, Steven Conrad
Genre: Action
MPAA Rating: PG (for bullying, martial arts action violence and some mild language)
Official Website: KarateKid-themovie.com

Starring: Jackie Chan, Jaden Smith, Taraji P. Henson

Plot Summary: In Columbia Pictures' "The Karate Kid," 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) could've been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother's (Taraji P. Henson) latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying—and the feeling is mutual—but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre's feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts "the karate kid" on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

Wow! No posts on this after it was released? I finally broke down and watched it. I've never been more pissed at a movie in my life. 12 year-olds? Really? It destroyed the whole subplot of a teenage boy trying to get the girl.

It killed all the great lines of the original. We didn't get to know the bad characters like we did in the original. By the final tournament I felt like I knew those guys (in the original). And it was missing "You're The Best Around"!

The original was filled with little scenes like Ali stealing the black belt for Daniel and the uncomfortable scene with Daniel kicking the brick at Ali's house. Stuff like that made the film.

They were able to have scenes like Miyagi healing Daniel seem awesome and not corny. And the fly catching scene, it just can't be duplicated. "You beginner luck."

Most of all, they were missing Elisabeth Shue!

Only in the Karate Kid would Ali Mills date Daniel Laruso and agree to get driven on a date in his mom's beat up station wagon, where they have to push start the car. I love that movie for so many reasons. This is BLASPHEMY.

Yes! Someone that understands the film.

Only in a movie would a heffer like Ali Mills be considered the popular cheerleader type.

But I still agree. Blasphemy.

To each their own. She's been my lifelong crush since '85. She's perfect!

Gaddabout, I was about to blast you and then I saw that I had already responded back in 2009. I still think you're crazy.

Cripes! If this was a straight remake, you and everybody else would be complaining. And now it's not a straight remake and everyone still complains.

For what it was, it wasn't a horrible movie. Maybe a bad idea, but not a bad movie.

You're darn right. I've very protective of my childhood faves.

It was on one day while I was doing homework and I was so disinterested, even while half paying attention, I turned it off after 20 minutes.

To be fair, few films could withstand that kind of viewing. OTOH, I've seen the movie and can find no reason to be fair to it.
