I always maintained at that time, and still do, that the flight route thing was pure bs. Fly in and out of San Diego airport some time.

Burbank an Midway are bad too because of the short airfields and proximity of neighborhoods. We had two accidents there landing.

True , but also there isn't going to be 65,000 people in that building. But I see the politics being played in that situation.

Something to note however was that the Pilots Assoc. was vehimently oppposed to the statium site on Washington. Why not the B of A tower?Again , just maybe the powers playing politics.

c'mon

65,000 for 10 sundays a year constitutes a serious hazard

but 3,000 people for 260 working days a year isnt?

really, the issue isnt how many people are in a particular building -- its the fear that an airliner on final descent clips the thing

the issue was pure politics

The main issue was for an aborted takeoff and pilots being able to emergency maneuver safely.

And yes the B of A tower should be an issue too. But why didn't the Pilots Assoc. and the FAA bring it to the forfront like the Stadium? Weren't they concerned? Did politics/media just ignore that?

When you speak of politics do you mean there were payouts to the right people by some stretch of the imagination?

The origional site on the Mesa Tempe border now houses a mall.
One of the arguments put forth was the stadium would attract prostitutes.
Yeah, Mesa and Tempe dropped the ball!
Big time!

I frequent this mall (called Mesa Riverview) and while the establishments are quite nice, the element at the movie theater and the stores (especially Wal-Mart) is down right frightening. If you bring the subject up on the AZcentral messageboards, these so called "concerned citizens" will rush to point out that they researched that stadiums bring blight to the surrounding neighborhoods and cause rapid property value decrease.

When a family cannot even feel safe shopping at a grocery store after night it's obvious these people failed miserably for not only that area, but for a substantial surrounding radius of Valley res
idents.

The real problems in Mesa are that they hired a 'sanctuary city' police chief, they chase business away with their business-unfriendly 'incentive' packages, totally useless city council and mayor, too many people afraid of progressing past the "Mesaberry RFD mentality" regardless of the population growth and they have failed miserably over the last 10 years in attracting any significant businesses (although we do have more payroll cash businesses per capita than anywhere else... related to the sanctuary city concept? of course not...), now they plan to just hold all the residents hostage for police and fire services until we give in to the property tax threat...in the meantime robberies, assault, and murder rates go up...and the "nothing we can do... we have limited resources" cry begins...
The loudest "beefs" about the stadium included the following:
  • No money for spoiled athletes
  • Bidwill Sucks (standard commentary no matter what)
  • The traffic will ruin our neighborhood
    • now their is a mall (duh)
    • have you driven through the 'hood'? it's a dump
  • Too much money
    • Mesa was to spend $25 mil for infrastructure
    • Instead offered $80 mil incentive to bring in Bass Pro Shop as it was a 'vacation destination'...(duh)
It is great to be a 'Mesan'... city pride is unlimited...

The only problem I have is that they promised that Maricopa county residents would be exempt from the TSA surcharges for rental cars and hotels. That is not true, they charge the TSA fee whether you are a MC resident or not, so it is not just tourists.
You need to tell the vendor that you are a Maricopa County resident and get those taxes back. Frankly, your gripe isn't with the law, it's with the vendor who doesn't want to keep track of where the customer lives so they can calculate the taxes correctly.

I've had to repair my car, and I loaned mine to my daughter for a week when her car was stolen. In each case, I've rented at Hertz, and they properly charge me only the taxes I'm obligated to pay.

Yup, a couple of times they tried to charge me the tax and I said something and it went away.

iirc these was also a site around Ray and I-10 which I personally am glad never happened. And to be honest, I think having the staduim in Glendale has worked out fine for everyone, nationally Glendale is still "Phoenix" so Phoenix wins, Glendale will never compete with Scottsdale nightlife, upscale community or Tempe for big game pre-parties and college nightlife so they continue to win there. And ASU has their stadium back, in fact the field at Sun Devils games hasn't looked this good since the 1980's!

A big reason why I voted for it.

My boss has made 2 trips this month to the area looking to buy a vacation home. He is looking at the million dollar + homes. He said I could use it sometimes. Hope he does then I might make a few trips to watch the games in person. Not sure of what area he is looking at but he is a golfer so it will be near some nice golf courses.
