True... I know that obviously the Monkees began as gimmick by Don Kershner to create a "squeeky clean" band of musicians to fill the void of the Beatles who since began sporting moustaches and no longer cared for that "teeny bopper" image that once possessed, however, their music (even though most of their earlier material was written by Neil Diamond, Boyd/Hart, Goffin/King..etc and they didnt initially play their own instruments) ranks up there as one of the best catalogues of all-time.....

It's hard to believe (I Am A Believer actually) that this is their 40th anniversary of their formation... I didnt get into them until '86 when they were celebrating their 20th..which MTV began airing all their episodes and the Monkees so happen went on tour (I actually saw them live during that tour and it was an amazing experience... even despite the absence of Mike Nesmith)..... I still listen to them to this very day.... my fave tracks came from their soundtrack "Head"... especially "Circle Sky" and "the Porpoise Song"......

Youtube is an excellent source of Monkees videos as well and for years I was trying to discover the following video clip that aired on MTV way back when during the summer of '86... I forgot exactly which episode it came from, but it showcased how radical the Monkees could sound at times.. hard to believe it's the same band that perform "Daydream Believer"....

I just love the "outer space" feel of this particular track.... way ahead of its time....

Anyways.. who else is a fan of the Monkees?

I like 'em okay. You know who wrote some of their songs?

Neil Diamond. Yup. Check it out.

My mom, born in 1954, was/is a huuuge Monkees fan. She was in love with one of them, I forget which one. When KPHO Channel 5 started showing the old eps back in the 80s my mom and I would watch them. :)

Fun fact;

"Outsold the Beatles and Elvis Presley combined in 1967."

Here's one that should freak you.

Jimi Hendrix opened for them when I saw them in Miami in 1967. I actually went to see Hendrix. They kicked off the tour in Jacksonville and the word got out about him. He lasted 4 dates on the tour and got the boot. Freaky to see all these adolescent kids with their Moms in tow and out walks Hendrix. The Monkees were awed by Hendrix. Tough act to follow.

MESA! :thud:
I was a HUGE Monkees fan in high school. Went to their reunion concert--my parents bought me a concert t-shirt which I wore to bed religiously for years. It was a fun time. Don't mind admitting it. The show was usually very funny--I still quote 'em sometimes. Mr. Schneider (the life-size doll with the pull-string) "Youth is wasted on children". Cracks me up. Or the one episode where Davy Jones is reading a fashion magazine, and how absurd they can be: "Why not take little metal bottle tops and nail them to your living room floor? It gives you the impression that you are walking on....little...metal...bottle tops". I swear they came out with that specifically for him & his English accent.
