Plot Summary: "The New World" is an epic adventure set amid the encounter of European and Native American cultures during the founding of the Jamestown Settlement in 1607. Inspired by the legend of John Smith (Farrell) and Pocahontas, acclaimed filmmaker Terrence Malick transforms this classic story into a sweeping exploration of love, loss and discovery, both a celebration and an elegy of the America that was…and the America that was yet to come. Against a historically accurate Virginia backdrop, Malick has set a dramatized tale of two strong-willed characters-a passionate and noble young native woman and an ambitious soldier of fortune-torn between the undeniable requirements of their civic duty and the inescapable demands of the human heart.

This movie looks absolutely beatutiful. Malick (sp?) seems to have a great eye. The Thin Red Line was a visually wonderful movie, too. :notworthy

As an aside, my step-father used to date Terrance Malick's wife (before she was married, obviously). He knows them on a fairly friendly basis. They got a christmas card from them this year.

It wasn't that bad. It was ok, but not that bad. Definitely not a GOOD movie.

Christian Bale was awesome...you cheer for him to get with Poc instead of Smith...totally outacted Colin in about 1/10th the screen/narrative time.

Has anyone seen this yet? It's rated a 7.1 at IMDB. It had a $30 million budget and only did $13 million.

Very, very slow, but interesting. Gorgeous cinematography, and the acting is very low key. The actress playing Pocahontas was actually very good.

Pretty much how I would sum it up also.

Beautiful and boring for the most part. Christian Bale steals the movie, and the woman playing Pocohantas was fantastic. Parts of it were fantastic, parts were not neccessary. Trim about 10-15 minutes and I'd have loved the move. I came away just liking it.

I just watched it. I definitely agree with the above comments. I really liked the way it was shot. The pace was extremely slow, but I didn’t mind too much. My favorite shots were from the shore showing the ships arriving and departing. They seemed extremely surreal for some reason.
