That blows!

Although I heard today that maybe in January, DTV will be getting TNT HD...along with a few others.

But it still sucks now :)

I'm just playing with you.
When MPEG4 finally plays out it will be a good thing.
Until then, I'm liking where I am.

Eh, Answered my own question (thank you google :) )

Toshiba To Launch SED TV's
David Richards - Thursday, 25 August 2005
Toshiba is set to partner with Canon in a $2.5 billion dollar venture to produce SED TV's. The first product due in late 2006 will be a 50" model.

Toshiba is dropping all Plasma production. Instead the company is set to partner with Canon in a $2.5 billion dollar venture to produce a new generation of flat panel displays using SED technology

SED technology was first shown in 1998 as a relatively tiny 10in prototype. By comparison the first SED (Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display) TVs will go on sale in Japan in the first half of 2006 will start at 50in. SED technology produces flat panels with a unique combination of factors: large size, high resolution, low power consumption, light weight and thin profile. The SED consists of a glass plate mounted with electron emitters. Positioned next to it is another glass plate coated with a fluorescent substance. Between the two glass plates is a vacuum. Application of voltage causes the emission of electrons. Some of these electrons are accelerated by the voltage applied between the glass plates and collide with the fluorescent-coated glass plate, causing light to be emitted.

Since it is a spontaneous light display similar to a CRT, it maintains levels of brightness and colour performance, as well as a wide angle of visibility, said to be on a par with a CRT. Larger screens can also be produced by simply increasing the number of electron emitters in accordance with the required number of pixels.

Although the first screens will appear as early as 2006, mass production will not begin until 2007 when the two companies expect to produce around 75,000 units. SED will enter a crowded technological battleground. As well as the established LCD and Plasma, it will encounter OLED (organic light emitting diode, currently being developed by Samsung and Seiko Epson amongst others) and at least three different projection systems: DLP, SXRD and 3LCD.

Anyone know if you can output the Cox DVR box to a DVD recorder? My DVR gets full fast and I'd like to dump some.

Although I don't have a recorder yet, yes you can.
The copy to VCR function is where you would do it from.

Get some composite RCA cables and plug them into the input on a VCR or PC tuner card.

On the DVR plug the cables into the VCR connectors.

In the menu you can record to VCR.

Just record from that recorder once you start it.
If you use picture-in-picture you can see what is going out.

Hey fella's, just wanted to chime in again about my ongoing attempt to get my new 55" LCD Sony Grand Wega showing the best picture possible.

Okay...you may recall me commenting earlier in this thread how after I made the switch to COX last month and after having and leaving DirecTV for the last year, I was unbelievably impressed with COX HD. However the analog sucked. So back to DirecTV we went with a brand spanking new HD-DVR Tivo unit thanks to DirecTV "customer retention service." Then after a few days...I went on to say in this thread that DirecTV's HD was not as good as COX. Okay, brings me to this...

After several phone calls and quality conversation with DirecTV's tech dept. to try to better my reception, they finally sent out a service tech. Diagnosis...bad HD-DVR-Tivo Box plus the original installer did NOT do a good job. The new tech I got took the time to figure out what was wrong. First he totally agreed our picture was not as sharp as it should be with the new HD-DVR box and HD satelite system previously installed. So after checking connections, signal strength, etc...he determined it was a bad HD-DVR box. New one is on the way, and I should get it Thursday according to DTV.

Also he fixed a lot of loose connections and wires on the outside of the house that the original installer didn't install correctly. HD reception is now much better, however, regular channels were still horrible. So new HD-DVR on the way. Hopefully, the new unit will take care of the problem.
btw...I witnessed the "original installer" serioulsy drop the HD-DVR unit getting it out of the truck. I didn't tell the new installer this in order to get a "true" assesment of what he thought was the problem. This new guy seemed way more like he knew what he was doing.

Anyways...the best news is that this installer was actually able to get the local Phoenix channels in High Definition by using the "over the air" antenna DTV supplied me with last month. Apparently, the original DTV installer didn't have a clue or didn't care so much as he barely even tried to get local HD reception. In fact he commented to me that I would never get the local channels and it was a waste of his time. He tried blameing it on the fact we lived out in Gilbert, and was too far for the signal to reach my house. Yeah right! The new installer got it in no time, and I am a freakin' happy camper!!!

Monday Night Football has never looked better!

Now I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hope the new Tivo unit shows the regular channels better. Not looking for "perfection" as no doubt they'll never look as good as HD reception, but please...don't be horrible.

That's awesome...as I said before, I was surprised at how bad you sad the picture quality was with DTV, because their resolution is better than Cable's.

This is an analog vs. digital argument. The transmission method doesn't matter much. The connection quality at each of these inputs is the important factor.

You are not going to get better color or more resolution with digital I don't think. You may have a (subjectivly) better picture on your set vs. another with HDMI over Component depending where any D/A conversions are going on.

You don't have to buy the most expensive cable to find out unless you need more shielding for some reason.

HDMI has sound go over it, which is a plus...as long as it's HDMI to HDMI...

I use component for my HD and it's beautiful. My DVD player has HDMI, and my TV has an HDMI input, so I use that for the DVD upconvert feature.

From the reporters notebook on Suns.com

It says DirecTV will be making HD games available. Might be worth a call.

FSN Arizona Televises Suns Games in HDTV
Posted: Nov. 15, 2005

FSN Arizona is set to bring its viewers the first of 10 High-Definition Phoenix Suns telecasts in 2005-06 starting Wednesday, Nov. 16, when they host the Memphis Grizzlies at America West Arena. A number of other Suns games against teams with the biggest names in the NBA can be seen in HD this season, including match-ups with the likes of Shaquille O'Neal, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Carmelo Anthony, Gilbert Arenas and Mike Bibby.

Fans in Arizona will have access to 10 HD Suns games this season through Cox Communications. The HD telecasts are being offered by Cox Communications as part of the national High-Definition alliance among the Fox-owned and managed regional sports networks and Cox. Both Cox and the nation's leading satellite provider DIRECTV are making HD games available, and FSN continues to work with all Arizona distributors to offer them to as many HD-capable homes as possible.

HDTV transmits a picture that is much sharper and clearer than standard-definition television pictures. These games will provide images six times more detailed than the traditional analog format.

The Suns HD telecasts can be seen on Cox channel 722 and may be viewed by those digital cable customers with an HDTV set and HD Digital Converter. FSN Arizona's live 30-minute Suns Countdown pre-game show, which precedes the Suns home games on the network will be televised in High Definition this year as well.
