I thought Mike Tyson retired years ago.

I'm sure the fighters are happy for those who contributed to their payday.

Nobody is retired when offered $20 million to return to work for 6 months. He "retired" in 2005 though when he lost again Kevin McBride in the 6th round by TKO.

He's had 2 exhibition bouts since retirement. One in 2006 where his opponent wore headgear and Tyson was clearly going half speed against a journeyman boxer named Corey Sanders. That was also a 4 round "fight" that was a clear cash grab.

In 2020 Tyson fought Roy Jones Jr, who was on commentary last night. That was more like last nights outing without any bad blood or fake feuding. It was called a draw after 8 rounds. The Jones fight was more of a celebrity type event than boxing match. It was originally supposed to be Tyson vs Bob Sapp, who was an old MMA fighter, but issues came about and a few other replacements couldn't be cleared either. That's when Jones stepped in.

Your first sentence contains the whole point.

This was a great marketing ploy to get boxing fans to pay to see a 58-year-old player box again.

Yes and no. Jordan retired multiple times. It's important to note context. Tyson was essentially retired for the last 19 years though. I believe he flirted with retirement before officially hanging up the gloves in 05 as well.

I think Michael Jordon last played an NBA game at age 39, the same age as Lebron James right now. That quite a difference from a boxer at age 58.

If someone wanted to watch a boxing match for sentimental reasons or other fights, I understand.

Tyson had a boxing match in 2020 when he was 54. It wasn't as competitive and he fought someone roughly the same age in Roy Jones Jr, who was 51. That was more of a glorified sparring session compared to the Paul fight. The first round of the Paul fight was competitive. If Tyson could have held up then I think we would have seen a KO as well, either one of them. It's overall legitimacy wouldn't be questioned as it's been since.

Personally I don't think it's worth complaining about, the legitimacy of the bout. It wasn't PPV so no one was really ripped off. I say that as someone who actually bet on the fight also, and lost. It added a bit more interest knowing I had a small financing stake. Other than the long run up of ads and various under card shenanigans, it was as entertaining as most other Netflix originals.
