It was an idiotic call, even with Whis' explanation. The last time they had the ball, they dominated our D and drove down for a score. We had just executed a great drive and scored, and stolen all momentum away. Suddenly, we fail on the onsides kick, and the momentum completely changed. You cannot count on the D standing up like that right after giving up a long drive for a TD the last time. Just because our D stood up and left us smelling like roses doesn't mean it was a good call. It was a bad, bad idea that fortunately didn't kill us. I like the aggressiveness, but not the timing.

Weird. The upgrade changed the way public polls are displayed. There is no longer a hyperlink under the number of votes.

There are no longer hyperlinks on almost anything.

I actually like it...clean. But, you have to intuitively know what may be clickable.

14-14, we score and then go for the onside kick. It fails. Crowd groans.

When I watch it on TV later, the announcers say "why?"

People complain online.

IMO, it was a great move. We did it very similarly before, against the Niners. We ended up scoring twice in the quarter, and grinding out most of the clock putting the game away.

Then, it was a gutsy call that worked like a freaking charm. This time it was a gutsy call that didn't go our way. The strategy behind it was sound though, to me. When momentum is building your way, try to grab it by the neck and squeeze every last drop you can.

At that point in the game I stood up and said how dumb can you get? IMHO it was wrong then and wrong now. If they had scored on that short field it would have demoralized the entire team and fan base. There are times to do that and times not to. Obviously many of you like the call and I respect your opinions. I really do not expect to see hat call again anytime soon under similar situations. Although I am not one who likes the popular calling time out just before a field goal attempt I can see why it might be done. I am not so sure you can freeze NFL FG kickers. This is at best a 50/50 call. The downside is you seem like an idiot to your defense if they block the kick or the kicker does not make it. If he misses it you might be labeled a genius. Risk not worth the reward IMHO. I am with the coaches who do not do it. It is likely this rule will be changed next season.

I loved the decision then, and love it now... IMO, if it worked it would have been a huge game-changer and most likely would have led to the end for the Cowgirls at that point...
But, just as important, the decision itself shows the HUGE confidence Whiz has in the defense as, if it doesn't work the opponent gets the ball with great field position! Whiz obviously knows this and is still willing to tell his defense - "Go Do Your Thing Fellas"!!!! I LOVE IT!!!

Isn't the entire idea of a surprise onside kick that it has to be at a point where the other team isn't expecting it?

What better time than in the scenario you describe, the reality is we fooled them, it just wasnt' a very good kick.

I agree in fact sitting at home I actually said now would be a great time for an onside kick.

The whole idea is they had momentum, we swung it with our drive, and an onside kick recovery and that stadium goes bananas. It would have worked if the kick had been better but that's the breaks, it's not an easy kick to pull off.

It's just scouting we clearly saw on film we could do some things against their special teams.

That's pretty much how I feel.

I also absolutely LOVE that Whis isn't afraid to take chances. He's a wild card, and supremely confident. He's also a guy who can take responsiblity for his mistakes (hear that Denny?). Those two things combined, to me, earn respect. It tells the players that he believes in them, and that he isn't going to point fingers.

Me 2. That's why I am still not sure about his decision to punt in Washington.

Shane, you are a pansy. :D

The call was grade A stupid. It was ABSOLUTELY the wrong call being at home in a 14-14 tie with the momentum.

But I still liked it.

My whole life I have called it an "onside" kick? Why?

Because you're a sheep and you follow the pack?

Actually I almost posted the exact same question no idea why we call it that.

Sure, and I'm normally for aggressive gameplanning like that. I think if our defense hadn't just been pounded into the turf on a 7-minute drive, it would have been a great idea. It worked out, but it still wasn't the right call, IMO. There are other situations that would be big surprises too; I figure there were better moments to try it.
