The Vampire Diaries

Four months after the tragic car accident that killed their parents, 17-year-old Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev, "DeGrassi: The Next Generation") and her 15-year-old brother, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen, "Everwood"), are still adjusting to their new reality. Elena has always been the star student; beautiful, popular and involved with school and friends, but now she finds herself struggling to hide her grief from the world. Elena and Jeremy are now living with their cool-but-overwhelmed Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning, "Smallville"), who is doing her best to be a surrogate parent.

Elena manages to find some comfort with her familiar social circle – best friend Bonnie (Katerina Graham, "17 Again"), frenemy Caroline (Candice Accola, "Juno"), and former boyfriend Matt (Zach Roerig, "Friday Night Lights"), but Jeremy is on a more dangerous path, hanging out with the stoners and using drugs to hide his pain. Jeremy is also trying to figure out why Matt's sister, Vicki (Kayla Ewell, "The Bold and The Beautiful"), is suddenly rejecting him and hanging out with Jeremy's rival, Tyler (Michael Trevino, "Cane").

As the school year begins at Mystic Falls High, Elena and her friends are fascinated by a handsome and mysterious new student, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley, "Fallen"). Stefan and Elena are immediately drawn to one another, although Elena is puzzled by Stefan's increasingly bizarre behavior when he appears suddenly at the cemetery where her parents are buried. What she doesn't realize is that Stefan is hiding a dark, deadly secret of his own – the fact that he's a vampire. At a bonfire party the next night, Elena and Stefan are just getting to know each other when chaos erupts after Vicki is attacked and left bleeding from a savage bite to the neck.

Fearing that he knows who is responsible for the attack, Stefan returns home and finds his older brother, Damon (Ian Somerhalder, "Lost"), whom he hasn't seen for 15 years. Damon is also a vampire, and the two brothers have a long and bitter history. Damon ridicules Stefan for rejecting their legacy of violence and brutality, but he understands his brother's obsession with Elena, since she looks exactly like a woman Stefan loved more than a century ago; a woman that Damon tried to make his own. Now these two vampire brothers – one good, one evil – are at war for Elena's soul and for the souls of her friends, family and all the residents of Mystic Falls, Virginia.

Based on the series of books by L. J. Smith, The Vampire Diaries is from Alloy Entertainment and Bonanza Productions Inc in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios with executive producers Kevin Williamson ("Scream," "Dawson's Creek"), Julie Plec ("Kyle XY," "Wasteland"), Leslie Morgenstein ("Gossip Girl," "Private") and Bob Levy ("Gossip Girl," "Privileged"). Marcos Siega ("Dexter") directed the pilot.

First episode wasn't bad. Nothing to write home about yet.

Watched 20 minutes. I want my damn 20 minutes back. A bad attempt at 90210 with fangs, and 90210 sucked.

I'm surprised you of all people actually watched it. You're not exactly their demographic, so it's not surprising that you're whining about it. :D

Sadly, mostly to myself...I liked it a bit. Might have had to do with the fact that Elena was smokin' hot :)

This show's going to be great for the network. It's literally going to be the new Gossip Girl. With vampires.

Nina Dobrev is hot. The show has a shot especially with people so into Twilight right now. I also know alot of people that have been really wanting another good vampire show. Many people I know feel like there really has not been anything close to Buffy or Angel since they went off the air. I seriously doubt this show will come even close to those but people are really looking for something in that vein.

Okay, this past episode just turned everything up a notch. I'm sorry, but I'm totally digging this series. They are building a nice backstory, a lot of history and now this development at the end of the last episode.

Doesn't feel like a "Gossip Girl" to me at all. It's much bigger than just the kids. Well, sort of :)

This is the #1 series on the network right now--it has the potential to be bigger than Gossip Girl. Which is pretty big for a network with only 8 shows and a demographic that never shows up in the ratings.

Good grief Mike, do you watch Twilight too?

Your man card is in serious debt right now.

I watched this with my wife...she said she is still undecided but we noticed a bunch of nods/ripoffs/similarities to other shows. Obviously, the premise is very much like Twilight. However, I noticed some things right off the bat.

Last name of Aunt is Somers which is a play on words for Summers used (a la Buffy - Buffy Summers). Friend of main character who is a witch (a la Buffy - Willow). Vampire with Ring that allows vampire to stay in the Sun (a la Angel). Competition for the same girl (a la Buffy and Angel - Angel vs. Spike). Blond character just like Harmony (a la Buffy and Angel) named Caroline. It seems like they tried to borrow from everything that is remotely recent and was popular from other vampire shows.

If they bring in other mythical creatures this Buffy/Angel/Twilight clone will be complete. This show doesn't appear to be very original but it does have some hot girls. I might watch this with my wife just for the eye candy.:D

This series is really impressive, it's nothing like a typical "high school" series. Other than Top Model, this has been a pretty good year so far for The CW. Not a fan of Melrose Place, but the other shows, especially this one, Gossip Girl and Supernatural have been pretty strong.

When you say impressive....from what perspective? Ratings?

Yes, ratings, reputation... I'm guessing you will scoff at that, but it's true. They are never going to have the ratings of ABC and CBS, but considering they're a network of only 8 shows 2 hours a night during the week, they're doing pretty well.

Nope I get that. Ratings expectations are much different if your on the CW, Syfy etc... Having some friends and family who have worked for production companies I get how all that works. I was just curious about what you meant by "impressive".

This is one of the few "together" shows I think my wife and I will give a chance. We both agree the show is hardly original but we like the cast and as long as the writing is decent we will stick around. We have been looking for a show in the same vein as Angel since it went off the air.
