Exactly. No need to back in to a playoff slot. Win it with strong season ending performance in the last 10 games. Go 7-3 and there's a very good chance the DBacks will return to the playoffs.

[Quick edit, and as some have pointed out] In this scenario the Mets would get in too (with a sweep v. ATL).Arizona will need to sweep and the Mets to win at least 2 of 3 to clinch. Both teams hold the tiebreaker vs. Arizona.

If the DBacks manage to make the playoffs (which is not looking too good right now giving the Braves, Mets, and DBacks schedules for the last five games), I think they'll be "backing in" like last year - hoping for someone else to lose to sneak in. The starting pitching is a mess, the bullpen is a catastrophe (other than Puk), and the offense has suddenly become hit and miss with the injuries. Hard to believe they'll have a better regular season record than last year with all the injuries and sub-par pitching - but that's where we are today. Anything can happen in the playoffs, but the DBacks are certainly limping (literally) toward the finish line.

The best thing that could happen to the DBacks (to help them back in to WC3) would be for the Mets to sweep the Braves. The DBacks aren't going to finish higher than WC3 regardless, so that dream will be closer to certainty with a Mets sweep of the Braves. We can't depend on the DBacks to win it themselves, not with the genius Lovullo at the helm, a pitching staff in complete disarray, and a Jekyll and Hyde offense.
