I am friends with several major college coaches and 3-4 times a year for the past 5 years I go to their games, sit on the sidelines, hang out with the coaches etc. I have been on the opposing sidelines at some great stadiums: Va Tech, Florida State, Uof Miami, Navy, ASU, Arizona, Wisconsin, Baylor, Syracuse, WVU, Louisville, Ole Miss etc... It is a unique perk that I have enjoyed...until this past weekend.

This weekend I went to the Wake Forest at Stanford games Coming into this weekend I just assumed Stanford fans were gentle. They are all rich smart kids right? They are progreesive, open minded "bay area" types, right? Wrong

As soon as we walked onto the stadium grounds it was dreadful. We were harrassed by hundreds of people in a large group, some of them mocking us so close that it almost got physical. Im no old man as well, I am 38, and can take care of myself...but not against a hundred angry fans

Anyway, i chalked that up to drunkards and walked on. Later, as the team was coming out of the tunnel, we met the rest of the Stanford fans. They proceeded to spit on us from above , yelling and screaming, and even throwing out the "N" word on several occassions. The sidelines were no better. All the fans werent just cheering, but made a point to throw things onto the bench area, yell and scream at players, and make racial comments to them.

I wont say all Stanford fans are like this, but the majority we ran into were awful. Its ok to cheer and even poke fun but to spit on another human and to throw out racial slurs is ridiculous. I can only think that this team has been bad for so long that the fans dont know how to react?

As i said before, I have been in some pretty hostile places but didnt expect this from Stanford no less. I know lots of you are PAC-10 fans, have any of you experienced this at Stanford or heard of this before? crazy....

I would advise you to not go to a Colorado games as an opposing fan.

It's sad, but it seems our society as a whole is steadily slipping in our civility towards one another.

Amber got free Pitt season tickets for the three of us from her employment with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

I've been to a LARGE number of ASU games.. I've even gone to a few roadies at U of A, UCLA, NAU and Cal. Since moving back here, I've been to Ohio State, WVU and Michigan road games, as well as a Marshall game.

I can assure you, nothing even comes CLOSE to the crude nature of a large number of Pitt fans. They are the most obnoxious, crude, disgusting people I've encountered. The language is awful (even by my standards, which is saying a LOT because I've been known to let the curse words fly, but even I don't do it around kids, these people have no regard).. If you even happen to be wearing oppposing colors, you may as well duck and run. Saw a guy go after a kid not much older than my daughter for wearing a Notre Dame jersey last year. Had his father not dropped him with a left cross, God knows what this jerk would have done.

It's awful.. Really is.

I am a WVU fan and grew up in WV. Believe me when I tell you that I understand how bad Pitt fans are. Especially when they are playing WVU.

What stood out for me were the racist remarks by several stanford fans. That is what disgusted me. I get yelling and screaming, but N words and spit, come on....

Agreed with the Colorado thing. Most fans will talk crap, but if you're friendly, they'll be your friend. Colorado fans were just a bunch of ********.
