Being directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Mickey Rourke...

The Wrestler

The film centers on Randy "The Ram" Robinson, a 1980s-era star pro wrestler who has become a burnt-out shell of his former self. After he has a heart attack during a small-time match, a doctor tells him he could die if he fights again. In an effort to build a new life, Robinson takes a job at a deli, moves in with an aging stripper and tries to build a relationship with her son. But the prospect of a rematch with his old nemesis the Ayatollah proves too tempting to resist, even if it means risking his life.

This movie sounds great. It won The Golden Lion at the 2008 Venice Film Festival and has some Oscar Buzz for Rourke.

The Wrestler

Release Date: December 17, 2008 (limited)
Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures
Director: Darren Aronofsky
Screenwriter: Robert Siegel
Genre: Drama
MPAA Rating: R (for violence, sexuality/nudity, language and some drug use)
Website: FoxSearchlight.com/TheWrestler

Starring: Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood

Plot Summary: Back in the late '80s, Randy "The Ram" Robinson (Mickey Rourke) was a headlining professional wrestler. Now, twenty years later, he ekes out a living performing for handfuls of diehard wrestling fans in high school gyms and community centers around New Jersey.

Estranged from his daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) and unable to sustain any real relationships, Randy lives for the thrill of the show and the adoration of his fans. However, a heart attack forces him into retirement. As his sense of identity starts to slip away, he begins to evaluate the state of his life -- trying to reconnect with his daughter, and strikes up a blossoming romance with an aging stripper (Marisa Tomei). Yet all this cannot compare to the allure of the ring and passion for his art, which threatens to pull Randy "The Ram" back into his world of wrestling.

Director Darren Aronofsky presents a powerful portrait of a battered dreamer, who despite himself and the odds stacked against him, lives to be a hero once again in the only place he considers home -* inside the ring.

Wow, part of that description sounds exactly like Jake "The Snake" Roberts story, in Beyond The Mat.

Just saw the movie...freaking great! Looks like Rourke is back. If you like Tomei, you will love her in this movie....great character role with very little left to the imagination...if you get my drift.

I tend to like those abrupt endings myself. The sad part about watching the movie is trying to get over Rourke's facial features that were destroyed by bad Plastic surgery ( is there really ever good surgery????). That man was very handsome at one point and was my favorite actor while growing up but I often find myself stuck on his face instead of the movie.

Kinda funny how life imitates art. He started out in the industry getting touch-ups for his teeth( were falling out) & cleaning himself up before getting the good roles and now it looks as if he is worse off than when he began...just like in the movie he made in the 80's.

Very good film. Having now see The Wrestler and all five Best Pic nominees, I am satisfied with the selections.

Rourke was fantastic, but Penn's Best Actor Oscar was well-deserved.

Best movie I've seen in a long time. Rourke was awesome. He definitely should have won Best Actor, IMO, especially when you take into account all the physical aspects of the role.

Marisa Tomei was also great. Damn, she looks good too! Hard to believe that she's 40.

I thought the ending was perfect, BTW.

Marisa Tomei naked and suggestive was the only reason I watched until the end. That is one fine hootchymama.

Just watched it, absolutely loved it from start to finish, including the ending. There was no need to show anything after that IMO.

Cruz and Penn must have been amazing to beat these two impressive performances. Good lord Tomei looked good.

Saw this earlier in the week on cable. It was good but I didn't really get the "great" vibe from it as it dragged at times.

Marisa Tomei is smoking hot.
