I just saw this movie again, and liked it better the 2nd time. The final scene has been parodied so much, it didn't have the impact on me that it did the first time.

But, man, there are a LOT of layers in this movie. I picked up on a lot of symbolism the 2nd time around and even interpreted some of the scenes and actions of the characters differently. It's "Citizen Kane-ish" in that way. Definitely should of won Best Picture, IMO, and I really like "No Country For Old Men".

Very much disagree. Too all over the place and the music was far too hokey.

I really liked the imagery in the film. Daniel's hair looked like oil at times and the ocean scene made it look like Daniel was swimming in oil. The cinematography was excellent, but overall I was disappointed.

Daniel Plainview is one of the most unlikable protagonists you'll ever find. I didn't like the ending either.

Daniel had already defeated Eli. Eli was broke and Daniel had humiliated him. I didn't find it very believable that Daniel would kill him. His revenge would have been much more satisfying if he let Eli go on living in shame.

I liked the music, but I can't say I really liked the film much. Definitely won't watch it again.

Just saw this movie last night. I don't know why it didn't get more love as it was the best movie I've seen this year. It should have gotten best picture over NCFOM.

One of the best character studies I can remember. But I liked the fact that it didn't beat you over the head with what the theme was. I know some people thought it was simply capitalism vs. religion but I thought it was deeper than that.

And the music was tremendous.

If I had closed my eyes and somehow could block out the dialogue, I'd swear I was watching one of those melodrama westerns with the sappy bad guy music.

After watching this film a second time and focusing a bit more on the score i've come to the conclusion that there's nothing wrong with the music. Some mentioned Kubrik's "2001:" ok, sure..... so whats the problem?
It didnt feature a cookie-cutter score that evoked the emotion that "you're watching a masterpiece."
Good film,good score.
I agree that the performances may have outdone the overall piece of work though.
"No Country" was better.

This movie was awfully boring. Whenever the movie lagged, the god awful soundtrack would attempt to interject drama where there was none. The characters were cartoony at best. Daniel Plainview is a mustache twirl from being Snidley Whiplash.

So a young man can't run away from a 70 something year old drunk with a bad leg walking on a bowling lane? One blow from said drunk crippled old man with a light wooden pin to the BACK knocks him out? Seriously unbelievable and stupid.

When you shoot someone with a derringer point blank to the face, burns happen by the way. Anyone who has ever used a gun could tell you that.

I really wish Hollywood would pay attention to little details.

Liked this movie a lot. DDL is the best actor in recent memory.

Finally saw this this weekend with a bunch of friends. I was soooo looking forward to it. Total let down. We all agreed that it should have be entitled "There will be disappointment."

I mean..... What was the point of this? Where is the big reveal? Why did I even care about the plot?

To answer your questions, I don't know, I don't know and I don't know.

Very much disagree. Too all over the place and the music was far too hokey.

The score was irritating at best. Damn, I could pull out my violin and play that crap.

I'm all for good movies and artsy films and whatnot, but this movie just was not good. I love DDL, but felt he overacted this one. I turned off the DVD player feeling like I did after watching Any Given Sunday ... that's two hours of my life (in this case more) that I will never get back.

I thought Day-Lewis played his character like he was trying to win an award. He sure didn't make the character belevable, IMO. Like some others have mentioned, he was a charicature more than anything else.
In order to do that i suppose he'd have to put on a memorable, intense, and other-wise amazing performance.;)

Totally agree. Way over the top.

I was so very disappointed.

Brilliant film. The score was as important as DDL's transcendent acting to create the mood and darkness of the film, and DDL transforms in a creature from hell. I was a little surprised by the ending, thought it was a strange way to finish the film, but wasn't disappointed. Even though it was almost 3 hours, I never found myself bored or checking the time.

I'd love to watch it again to catch more of the subtleties. Little things like his signature change as the movie goes on, among many other things. Considering about 95% of what Hollywood puts out is complete formulaic garbage, this is the kind of movie that shows the true power of a great film.

Absolutely. The score in this movie is the most intense I have ever heard. By the end of the movie I felt like bashing that guys head in.

Finally saw this film. Beautiful cinematography and great acting by DDL but Paul Dano was on equal footing,as he put in an awesome performance.

However, it left me flat. Took too long, IMO, to tell what it was telling. Never really grabbed me or made me care a bit about Plainview. I would have much rather watched the spiral downward than jump from HW's return to his marriage and catch the tail end of the spiral. To me, the spiral is the fun part and it was well done on the way up but just skipped over the way down with a few teasing scenes (the restaurant) thrown in. It was a bit all over the place, and I feel could have been tightened up a lot.

A beautiful, well-acted mess, IMO.
