Now that we've got Rhodes, I can afford to be objective and reflective. Some random thoughts.
We know that Antrel can be dangerous after the pick or FR. But we also know that he can be inconsistent and deficient in coverage, tackling angles and wrapping up. What most fans outside the Valley have seen of Rolle is the highlight-reel stuff and not the messed-up plays.
If Coughlin and his staff can harness the good stuff and eliminate the bad stuff, so that Rolle is lights-out in all aspects of the game, then they'll have gotten their money's worth. But I wouldn't bet on it.
With Rolle's departure (& before that Edge), what remnants of "The U" culture remain on our roster and has the presence of "U" alum been a good thing looking back and looking forward?
One thing you have to say about Boldin, Rolle and Dansby (and the lack of publicity exposure they got as Cardinals) - When they were Cardinals, you seldom saw much of #81, #58 or #21 on the backs of Cardinal jerseys on the ESPN or NFLNetwork TV screens. Now, it seems like they're hogging more than 50% of the highlight footage on the tube. Suddenly they're famous!!!
I'm not sure what the Cardinals can do about the lack of publicity they get for their players. I suspect it's not because they don't try but instead that most media folk fly back and forth along the NYC-Chicago-LA corridor with side trips to Dallas and Miami; with the Valley representing some sort of media rural "backwater" that gets visited maybe once or twice a year. Whatever the case, I think it's a problem and I think it played a part in our losing Dansby and Rolle. Perhaps the PR dept needs to be more aggressive and pro-active with regard to Cardinal Cam, more interviews etc.
Finally, the signing of Rhodes was huge because it helped dilute the negative karma of three top players all leaving on Black Friday. It was a much needed off-season "W." But it's only a big first step. I hope the front office doesn't figure the heat's been taken off and they can sit back and relax. There's still some serious roster-rebuilding needed to be done.
