Day two will be a very long day. Perhaps the Cards will shorten it by once again jumping up to get their guy, as they did last season. With Charles and Smith still on the board, the Cards can still acquire a premier running back. The Cards would likely have to work through the Dolphins, as he Rams are rumored to want to acquire a runner to take some of the load off of Jackson. The Cards could also grab the end they need to spread the field, since Caldwell is bizarrely still on the board. A top lineman, Greco, is also still available. Beyond them, no one is worth going up to get unless they have fallen in love with Morgan or Booty. It would cost at least the fourth round pick to go up to the top of the round, but I’d do it in a heartbeat if they can find a trading partner and get one of those backs.

Even if they don’t move up there are quite a few players still on the board who could help. Two tight ends, Rucker & Cottam, have different games, but could likely be of value. Zuttah from Rutgers could become a first rate guard. Bell from UNLV, could add some strength in the middle of the linebacker unit. If I can drag myself out early tomorrow (pity you guys in AZ), I’ll try to make a more comprehensive review.

Defense, Defense, Defense!!!! Worry about RB next year.
The problem with that is there is no premier RB's in next years class. Even check nfldraftscout.com if you don't believe me. Inless you want to count Michigan States RB as a premier RB (which I don't)

well, guys like Mendenhall were nobody's last year at this time. RB's do appear and disappear, Slaton was elite at this point last season. I doubt we will look at the draft in March 2009 and say it has no running backs better than Jamal Charles avail in rd 2.

I dont know where or when Slaton is picked to be drafted but he does have game breaking speed and instincts. He wouldn't be a bad pick at some point.

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

WTF???

Why not????

Dude is nails. Best FB in the draft. What are you smoking, my friend??

Fullback shmullback. We had a FB last year who was highly regarded league wide. He had little to no impact during any game whatsoever. In fact it got to where he was rarely even seeing the field. Waste of a pick IMHO.

Yeah there is only so much you can spread out the ball and we have guys who want it all the time allready. We need someone who can spread/stretch the field.

Unless Schmidt's a special teams dynamo no thanks. But not until the 4th, if then.

Chris Wells will enter the draft and he's a complete beast of a RB but, i agree, the overall RB class doesn't look very strong.

We have NOBODY to step in for Edge if he was to go down. We are looking for depth and competition. Smith or Choice would give us the most viable replacement should an injury take Edge out of a game or season. Charles would give us blazing speed.
I will be shocked if we don't take a rb with the 81st pick.

The more I read about Tashard Choice the more I like. Harry didn't mention his name so I guess Smith or Charles would be a better fit.

Will We Have To Trade Up?

I think 95% of the posters on this Board, myself included, want a RB in the 3rd round. I am using the GBN ranking sheet, and they have Charles #1, Smith #11, Slaton #14, and Choice #36. Detroit has already moved up to pick first in Round Three, and Mayock said that RB or CB would probably be the choice. So I would think if we want Charles or Smith, we'll have to move up, although it's possible Smith will be there at #81.

I'm still having a hard time remember that day 1 is only 1st and 2nd, there usually is quite a bit of talent in rd 3. I do admit there is alot more this year, a few first rd talent guys and ton of guys that would normally go in the 2nd. Here is the best available according to NFL Draft Countdown.

http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/results/bestdaytwo.html

I'd love to figure out a way to pick up another pick in 3 and another in 4, maybe a second next year, but doubt we'd find a partner. I think we need a OT, OG, RB, another CB, and P would be nice.

3rd - Charles or Smith - I'd prefer Charles because of the speed, Smith would be better replacement for Edge, rather than compliment, but either would be fine and great value here.

4th - Hills or Molden - Hills is very talented, but with a long injury history so there is some risk, was top rated TE coming out of HS but knee injury took his elite speed. Don't know much about Molden, but with Hood, DRC, and Green he could be a dime CB and special teams guy until next year.

5th - McGlynn or Greco - Never bad idea to have OL depth and one of these guys could push Wells late this year.

6th - Durant - Say what you will about drafting a punter, but this guy will be fantastic. Big leg and very adept at dropping the ball inside the 20, he'd be huge for our defense.

7th - Ikegwuono or best OL available - Not sure if Ikegwuono will be here in the 7th, but he's a 2nd round talent guy that dropped cause of the injury, if we take Molden in the 4th then go OL here.

He can also punt. There you go, 2 birds with one stone! :D
