This is just a bit ludicrous, 10 year old kid being "recruited"

Story is a bit too long to be cut and pasted(too many ads too) but it's about a 10 year old kid from Baltimore being recruited by AAU coaches, shoe companies, highschool coaches etc because he's such a promising basketball player. One guy in here is bragging that all he has to do is get Carmelo Anthony to call the kid and he's mine. The kid is 4'6"!

Not surprising, sports fans have heard about OJ Mayo for about a decade now.

Now rumor is we're going to see him twice next year in a USC uniform.

Yep he visited USC last week. We'll see, I'm still betting he never plays a college game, I don't think he could if he wanted to but we'll see.

I first heard of Mayo in I think 8th grade, maybe 7th, ESPN had some special that showed him playing varsity HS ball while still in junior high, already had the mustache too.

I'm not a fan of Tim Floyd but I will say this, it would be great for the Pac 10 if Mayo actually did go to a Pac 10 school, would get a lot more national attention out West.

Indeed. I would love the PAC 10 exposure. Apparently Mayo has it narrowed down to USC and Kansas State (since they hired Huggins).

Judging by the schools that are among Mayo's favorites (Ohio State and K-State most notably) I find it hard to believe everything is legit should he go to USC. Exposure is not encessarily a good thing if impropieties are found during his recruitment which I have a feeling is somewhat inevitable.

Well I've probably written this before here but here goes. I'm told by fairly reliable sources that Mayo has been widely rumored to have had contact with agent Andy Miller. Miller is the guy who got Erick Barkley and Mike Miller in trouble in college, the guy who the author of "the Jump" says had a contract with Telfair when Telfair was still playing in HS. Miller is closely tied to Bret Bearup who not surprisingly has been tight with Mayo for years.

Now the Tim Floyd thing seems to be out of nowhere a few months ago. To my knowledge Floyd is not one of the "chosen ones" that Bearup steers recruits to(used to Bill Donovan, Quin Snyder and Bob Huggins) so as soon as I heard Mayo was considering USC I wondered what that meant related to Bearup and Miller.

Way back when Tyson Chandler was still in HS it was widely reported he was considering committing to UCLA even though he was planning to go straight to the NBA. THe idea was announcing they had Chandler would help Lavin recruit other kids. The problem was it was widely reported by people in the recruiting game that Chandler couldn't play college ball even if he wanted to because of dealings with agents and shoe companies, the NCAA had essentially ruled him no longer an agent. The NCAA can question a kid's amateur status, but they have no jurisdiction in HS. So they can determine a kid who's still in HS has no amateur status for college, but they can't bar that kid from playing in HS. That's up to some other governing body. That's the rumor with Mayo now that the NCAA does not consider him an amateur but will make no comment on it until he's out of HS because they have no jurisdiction on him until then.

I won't believe it until he actually plays a game in college but if Mayo does play college ball I'd just as soon it be in the Pac 10. And yeah it probably would be a recruiting violation waiting to happen but frankly I think it's just a matter of time before Floyd gets USC in trouble anyways.

You know, if Congress was really so concerned about cleaning up sports, they'd go after the AAU and agents...

I concur. The AAU and all these shoe camps have done more damage to basketball than performance-enhancing drugs.

Definitely agree, the article I posted being a classic example of that.

Regarding Mayo et al. Apparently Taylor King(ex UCLA verbal now headed to Duke) was on LA radio today. King is close friends with Kevin Love (played on same AAU team off and on). He was asked about a rumor started by Andy Katz today that Love would announce his decision very soon, and King said that he hears UCLA fans could be very happy. The host of the show then said the rumor is Mayo is going to commit soon too and that USC appears to lead, and King said again he didn't know but he too had heard that Mayo is leaning to USC.

It was on the Loose Cannons show today, I can't hear it but UCLA fans have been posting about it today. Katz' column today he says Love might commit anyday now. Last week he said that the rumor around AAU circles was that Kyle Singler would soon commit to Duke. Mayo, Love and Singler are all rated top 5 in their class but both Love and Singler have said all along they want to wait to commit so it would be surprising if both committed so soon.

FYI ESPN is reporting Mayo may have already committed to USC.

O.J. Mayo, the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2007, told the USC coaching staff and players last week that he would commit to the Trojans, multiple sources told ESPN.com.

The 6-foot-4 Mayo, as recognizable a high school recruiting name as LeBron James and Greg Oden, made the statement while on his unofficial recruiting visit last week in Los Angeles. He still needs to make that sentiment public, though. He could do so as early as this weekend at the Reebok ABCD Camp on the campus of Fairleigh Dickinson in Teaneck, N.J.

Wherever Mayo lands, he will make an immediate splash.High school recruits often say one thing to a coaching staff to appease them and then sign somewhere else during the fall and spring signing periods, but multiple sources told ESPN.com that the Trojans simply are awaiting official word from Mayo. Even after he makes an announcement, though, the Trojans would have to hang on to his commitment until the November signing period.

NCAA rules forbid college coaches from commenting publicly on commitments until they receive a signed national letter of intent. That said, if Mayo makes it official this weekend -- or anytime before the fall -- he would immediately go down as the most significant recruit in USC basketball history.

Mayo still could still have other alternatives instead of going to college in the fall of 2007. There is a possibility he could go overseas for a year or compete in a barnstorming tour with other high-profile players who are prohibited from entering the NBA draft until they are at least one year out of high school and at least 19 years of age. Details of possible moves like this are expected to be explored in September.

Still, those would be unchartered waters. The more traditional approach for Mayo would be to do what Oden did -- go to school for at least one year. Oden chose Ohio State and is projected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA draft if he declares. Mayo, who is still scheduled to finish his high school career at North College Hill in Cincinnati, is a potential No. 1 overall pick in 2008 if he were to declare.

"[Mayo] could change a program and give it instant credibility," said a source. "He sees the big market and knows that he's not too far away from being marketed. [Going to USC] would only help him and he's confident enough to win a national championship."

The assumption for over a year was that Mayo would go to Cincinnati if Bob Huggins were still employed there, or follow him to wherever he landed, which ended up being Kansas State. Multiple sources told ESPN.com, though, that USC coach Tim Floyd received a phone call in November that Mayo was interested.

Mayo then played in an event in Los Angeles in December, with reports surfacing that he was interested in a West Coast school. The assumption at the time was that it was UCLA, but by December, it had been made clear to USC that it was the Trojans, not the Bruins, who were in the hunt.

Multiple sources said that Mayo wanted to be in a major media market and that he told the USC staff that he didn't want to be just another name at a school like Duke or North Carolina. He wanted to win big, go to the NBA and already have been marketed in a media center. Sources also said that Mayo was very aware of the attention that USC's back-to-back Heisman winners Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart received the past two seasons.

"He's a little bit different for a kid his age," a source said.

Mayo was in Los Angeles last week from Wednesday to Friday. He met with the coaching staff, played with USC's returning players on campus and had a conversation with USC athletic director Mike Garrett. The meeting with USC coach Tim Floyd was the first for both parties. A source said Floyd has only talked to Mayo a handful of times, with Mayo -- more than USC -- leading the recruitment.

That's what makes this even more of a coup for the Trojans, assuming it becomes official. Even though he coached in the NBA at Chicago and New Orleans, Floyd has only had one highly-rated freshman in his college career -- Marcus Fizer, while he was at Iowa State.

The timing of a Mayo commitment couldn't come at a better time for the Trojans. USC is still emotionally spent after dealing with the tragic death of freshman point guard Ryan Francis and also needs to overcome the first-semester ineligibility of star shooting guard Gabe Pruitt. The Trojans are also opening its new arena, the Galen Center, this fall.

A Mayo commitment may lead to another major coup if teammate and close friend Bill Walker, another top-10 player in the class of 2007, were to follow him to USC. The two have said for the past two years that they would play together in college.

This part is a reasonable explanation for USC. I have always thought that some of the big name recruits would be better served by going to different programs, rather than all going to Duke and UNC.

That's why Mayo and Walker were said to be interested in K State. Last year in an interview Mayo said that he, walker, and Michael Beasley had discussed possibly all going to school together, not to a "traditional power" and winning a National Title. They considered it a challenge of sorts. Beasley committed to K State last week. It would be interesting but I can see why Mayo would want to play in LA it would be nice marketing for a year.

note in the article they discuss Mayo possibly playing overseas or in some barnstorming league in the US for a year. He's talked about this multiple times, even after the NBA rules change, that he may not play college ball after HS. Of course he doesn't come out and say I'm going to be stripped of my amateur status and forced to play overseas, he talks about how travelling for a year would be educational.

The irony of the Mayo to USC stuff is his current HS is the Trojans, red and gold, and he wears #32. So now he'll go to USC and wear red and gold, name is OJ, #32.

All this is very interesting. I wonder how the rest of USC's team/recruiting class looks.

USC has a kid named Daniel Hackett, a SG who will be a senior in HS this year and is highly touted. So Walker would push Hackett at SG but they could easily play 3 guards. They have Malik Story for 2008 a SG/SF but they don't expect Mayo or Walker(if he joins Mayo as expected) to stay more than one year anyways.

Hackett is just the latest in a tradition Floyd is establishing at USC. Hackett's dad, Rudy Hackett(ex Syracuse player) is beginning his first year as strength and conditioning manager for .... USC. Miraculously after hiring Rudy, USC got a commitment from Daniel. Rudy was an assistant coach for Daniel's HS before he got the job with USC.

Their class of Mayo, Walker and Hackett would without a doubt be a top 5 national class, probably #1 overall.

One interesting point I forgot about but just was reminded of on a USC board. If Walker follows his buddy Mayo to USC he'll be reunited with hackett as I mentioned. a few weeks ago mayo and Walker were in Oregon for a tournament, Walker was ejected from the game for punching an opposing player in the face as they ran down court(nobody seems to have it on tape but it's been reported multiple places). Walker was ejected, and the coach threatened to pull his whole team, Mayo included, out of the tournament. After a few minutes, they overturned the ejection and let Walker play in the game and the tournament.

The player he punched? Daniel Hackett.
