it looks like they are going to sign him to an extension.
Basketball coach Evans to return to ASU
By Jerry Brown, Tribune
While a lot of questions remain unanswered at Arizona State, one has been put to rest. Rob Evans will remain the men’s basketball coach. And he could be there awhile.
University president Dr. Michael Crow confirmed to the Tribune Thursday that Evans will be back next season for his eighth year with the Sun Devils.
A source close to the athletic department confirmed Thursday night that the university is currently in negotiations for a third contract extension with Evans, who has two years remaining on his current deal.
"It hasn’t been announced yet, but Rob Evans is our basketball coach,’’ Crow said following his second news conference in four days regarding former ASU football player Loren Wade, who is accused of murder.
Before the regular-season finale against Arizona on March 5, Crow said he would evaluate Evans’ status when the team completed play.
Evans was under fire during the final two months of this season after the Sun Devils failed to capitalize on a 11-1 start and didn’t reach the NCAA tournament for the sixth time in seven years. The Devils won only seven of their last 20 games, finishing an 18-14 season (7-11 in the Pac-10) with a firstround loss to Nevada-Las Vegas in the National Invitation Tournament.
But Evans has been lauded for cleaning up a program ripped apart by a point-shaving scandal and several other brushes with the law under previous coach Bill Frieder. Evans has built a strong reputation for recruiting athletes of strong character and has improved the graduation rates of the program.
Overall, Evans is 108-103 (.512) in his seven seasons at ASU. In his 13 seasons as a head coach (including a sixyear stint at Mississippi), his overall record is 194-184 (.513).
The Devils will lose at least two starters — senior guards Steve Moore and Jason Braxton — from this year’s team. On Tuesday, Pac-10 Player of the Year and projected firstround pick Ike Diogu announced he was making himself eligible for the NBA Draft, although he has not hired an agent and still has the ability to return for his senior year. Diogu said in early March that he couldn’t envision returning for his senior season if Evans wasn’t the coach.
Evans was in St. Louis attending coaches meetings at the Final Four and was not available for comment.
