This mid-Hudson Valley cycling event has been ranked as one of the best in the country.
USA Today's recent 10Best Readers Choice Awards ranked 5K races, fun runs, half marathons, marathons, road cycling events and sprint triathlons.
There are plenty of bike rides in the area, but one in particular has taken the national stage: Discover Hudson Valley Ride.
Starting and ending at Victor C. Waryas Park in the City of Poughkeepsie, this ride attracts many to the area, including riders from 15 states. Those from New York City have easy access with the race's proximity to Poughkeepsie's Metro-North station, too.
"Poughkeepsie serves as the perfect gateway to this cycling adventure, providing riders with a vibrant and historic setting to begin and end their journey," Ken Podziba, president and CEO of Bike New York, said in an email statement.
Discover Hudson Valley Ride, a part of Bike New York, takes riders through Poughkeepsie and the surrounding mid-Hudson Valley area, such as the Walkway Over the Hudson, rail trail, or parts of Ulster County and up to northern Dutchess County, depending on the mileage route riders choose.

"This recognition is a testament to the breathtaking routes, welcoming community, and dedication of our riders and volunteers, who have made this annual event an unforgettable experience since 2009," Podziba said.
Routes range from 15 to 100 miles, catering to all skill levels, and proceeds for the event benefit Bike New York's free bike education programs.
"This event would not be possible without the support and commitment of the City and Town of Poughkeepsie, Walkway Over the Hudson, Hudson Valley Rail Trail, and Dutchess Tourism," Podziba said. "Their collaboration and dedication help make the Discover Hudson Valley Ride a seamless and extraordinary experience for cyclists year after year."
"Starting and finishing in Waryas Park, this ride showcases the remarkable beauty of the Hudson Valley with five distinct routes, offering cyclists of all levels a chance to experience scenic roads, challenging climbs, and exhilarating stretches through rolling landscapes," Podziba said.
Riders have the chance to choose from a variety of routes and elevations, with 15-, 33-, 55-, 75- or 100-mile options. There are fully stocked rest stops, repair stations and a "Finish Festival," featuring a beer garden and food trucks.
"From sweeping views of the Hudson River to the charm of the city’s streets, the Discover Hudson Valley Ride truly captures the essence of this magnificent region," Podziba said.
This rain-or-shine event has bike rentals available, too, and children can engage in learn-to-ride classes, running in conjunction with the children's museum.
Note, it takes place on streets open to traffic if you're looking to sign up, but North Water Street in Poughkeepsie will be closed during the first 15 minutes of each start window for an easier ride out.
Registration for this event is coming up soon, beginning on Monday, April 7, and the day of the ride is Sunday, Oct. 12, 2025, flaunting the region's fall foliage.
