I think THF is stupid and hurts teams but hopefully the FB/Google speculation on streaming comes through so I can at least watch when AZ is on thursday.

Thursday night football will now be on almost every week the upcoming season. The good news? Every team is guranteed a prime time game next year. The bad news? Not everyone gets NFLN and people tend to forget about TNF. Seems like every year Goodell does something else to cheapen the game a little more.

Adding more football is cheapening the game? Interesting take from this...

didnt add football, just sticking it on a different day on a network half the country doesnt have and making life difficult for teams traveling across the country to play a game 4 days after the former.

No, but putting it on a night for the sole purpose of generating revenues while leaving a large portion of the fan base is. Goodell is a bad commissioner IMO. He may be bringing in money for the league, but his ideas to do so suck IMO. Whether it be the Thursday night draft for round 1 and Friday night for round 2, adding extra regular season games to 18, the European games, The hourlong schedule release fiasco on NFLN and now this it just seems like he's selling out the league and it's traditions for extra $$$ when the league is already making billions. It cheapens the game to me.

If they were concerned only about revenues, they would have put it on a primetime network like they did Sunday Night football where they could earn 2-3x more at least.

I can understand some of your other points though.

If they weren't concerned about only revenues they would have kept it the same instead of putting it on primetime and excluding a significant portion of their fan base.

I simply don't agree. If they were only concerned with revenue, why wouldn't they try to get the most revenue possible? The NFL makes billions from their TV contracts, but the stations earn the same amount, if not more in advertising.

So we are losing 5 more games on Directv Sunday Ticket. Who wants to bet that prices will still go up on the plan?

It's amazing that there will be now 13 less games on Sunday than a few years ago but the price still goes up every year.

Why? Because the NFLN is owned by the NFL. The Nfl is the most popular sport in the country and are vying to get NFLN on all carriers. Why wouldn't they want to broadcast games on their own network, while at the same time make fans angry who don't get NFLN, who in turn will put pressure on their cable companies to carry NFLN? It's a direct stream of revenue to the NFL and they won't have to share profits with any of the major networks.

Sounds like a solid business plan to me...

(We get the Thursday night package up here through both the NFLN and one of our all sport cable channels)

not crazy about Thursday night football and agree, it cheapens the game for my experience. I like that Football is only on twice a week. makes Sunday feel like a holiday during football season.

Of course it's a good business plan, in fact it's an excellent one. I'm not as naive to think that the NFLs existence isn't to make money. It's just one more reminder of how greed and excessive wealth permeates our society and that nothing is immune from"selling out".

So if every cable company carried NFLN, would it be a problem then? Even if every carrier carried NFLN, they still couldn't make as much in advertising on their own network than carrying it on one of the big 4 over the air. Again, it still isn't only about revenue here.

This has a familiar ring. Many said similar things when Monday Night Football was introduced.

At least I hope the Cards game this year is at home. Seems like every other game on Thurs was on the road.

Home on a weeknight would seem to mess up tailgating though... lots of people have to work

I'm psyched about this, despite some of the complaints. I love football and the more the better and frankly that's just another day of football added to my schedule. Also think this is a test run for an 18 game season, obviously. I really don't care if they do away with preseason and the pro bowl if I get more football games crammed into my calender.

I do have sympathy for people who don't get NFL network, I'd be mighty pissed, but given that I'd probably have to move closer to civilization. :)

(That's a joke, please don't hurt me)

Those home market games are televised on one of the local networks for those who dont have NFL Network.

So you wont miss the Cards if they end up on there.

Have never been too impressed with the Thursday Night Football on NFLN. For the most part, the games are pretty crappy matchups.

I have no desire to watch Jacksonville at Cleveland, no matter which night or network it is on.

You can rest assured, great games like the Saints vs Packers won't be anywhere near NFL Network.

Not a big deal to me...

How is this for a business plan? Get your own network set up for $300 million move some football and almost all your basketball games to that network from FoxSW and a local station and then have almost no one able to watch it. One of the great moves of all time by the University of Texas.

It's why Texas a&m left for the SEC. They couldn't stand UT out Aggie'n them.

This is kind of what happened to football ( soccer !) over here with the Premiership.
Used to be most matches played on Saturday with the odd one on Sunday.
Now it is quite normal to see just 4 games on a Saturday , 4 on Sunday , some on Monday as well so the traditional Saturday afternoon football day is gone for a lot of people.

IMO ,having more Thursday games dilutes the impact and uniqueness of the Thanksgiving day games also.
And am sure it causes problems with teams having short weeks preparation.

Having all the games on Sunday , with the special MNF works pretty well.

Seems like Goodell has a thursday night obsession, same as when he changed the draft process.

Again, it still isn't only about revenue here.
The NFL is a business, each of it's associate teams is a business. The primary objective of any business, with the expecption of non-profitss, is to maximize profits.

It's always about the revenue!

I pretty much fall with Ct on this topic; both TNF and Goodell.
