There were rumors he was on his way out. The results just haven't been there.

Going to be a lot of major changes next season.

I would love to have Murphy back. I played for him in 99-01 and he by far gets the best out of players. I honestly hated him my first year because I didn't play very good. He wouldn't hold anything back and would say whatever he felt. To him, this is a way to find out what type of person (player) you were. Long story short, he did help me get better my following year. He "mentally" prepared me not only for baseball, but for life. I know (and he does), his past was not the best. He was the biggest ******* to people and this didn't help his cause when the investigation happened against him. I know he got the shaft on being forced to resign. The NCAA really didn't have a real big reason to make him resign, but again he burnt a lot of bridges along the way and people wanted to see him fail. Anyhow, I would love to see him back in a Sun Devil uniform. Not only because he is a very good friend, but to see ASU baseball back to the dominate powerhouse they were. I also believe that is was unfair to Coach Esmay as well. He has been the head coach of ASU for 5 years and has had fantastic years. ASU lead the PAC 12 in almost all categories this past year and the new AD coming in and saying there needs to be a change??? So, you are going to fire the baseball coach (which made the postseason 4 of 5 years- would have been 5 of 5 but they were on probation the first year) but give the basketball coach that has made the postseason twice in his 7+ years an extension??? Already not a fan of Anderson because of this scenario.

Murph has my vote, but with Crow being the ASU President and the one that forced Murph to resign, the chances are extremely slim.

I though Tim got a one year extention? Did he just not want to be extended and just resigned?

Eric(Iceman), would Murphy want to come back? Just doesn't seem like he would after all that has gone on.

Yep. I talked to him right after Esmay resigned and asked him. He was all about it, but said there is little chance that it would be possible if Crow was still there.

That doesn't seem like much of a salary for that job.

How big of a name could they get if they paid better?

This seems like a home run hire. If you can take Indiana to Omaha, thats something. Miami (OH) and Indiana were both complete messes before he took over. His overall winning percentage isn't that great, but that's largely due to taking over project type programs. With the move to PHX Muni and the ASU name, he ought to be able to hit the ground running.

Sounds like a great move for ASU and for Coach Smith.

It does seem to fit really well, doesn't it? He turned Indiana into a great program and earned the opportunity to take over a premier program as it moves into a whole new era. Sounds as if he was a good recruiter, too.

Can't wait for next season.

Nice. He sounds like a good fit here from what I have read. Look forward on seeing if he can make ASU a baseball team again!

Good hire for sure. Just wonder how he is going to be able to make the transition from the no pressure at Indiana, to the must win, short leash administration at ASU??? I have seen so many different things go on there since I have played back in the late 90's/early 00's. College baseball has changed for sure. The bats are weak and the baseballs they use now, have no pop to them. Esmay got ridiculed for not having the .400 batting average that college baseball used to. Now around .300 is good. They are changing the ball for next season. The college world series is a great example on how it has changed. It used to be games where the score was always 10-8 and 15-11. This year there were games that were 2-1, 1-0 (except last night).

I remember the 98 World Series. That was insane, like a college football game. 21-14, I think.

I also remember Ryan Mills getting hit in the face the season before I started classes at ASU, so I don't have a problem with the decrease in offense.

I think a good coach will get the best out of his players and I am optimistic that Coach Smith can do that. (Or else!) LOL.

As I recall the great ASU teams were anchored by pitching. Yes, the Sun Devils had great offensive players in their history but the teams that were really good had the solid pitching. This goes back to the days of Bobby winkles and Jim Brock.

I remember that clearly when Mills got his mouth wired shut because of that line drive off his mouth. That was the start of taking the -5 away from the college game. Meaning the bats were 34 in length and 29 oz in weight, 33/28 etc. The bats were so light and so long with the thin alloy barrels (also huge), that hitters were taking a 90 mph fastball and hitting it off the barrel back over 115 mph. No reaction time for pitchers. Plus, hitters would get jammed or hit the ball of the end of the bat and it could still be a homerun. With wood, thats a broken bat or at least a pretty painful at bat!!

The bats now are -3 and have been regulated so much. It makes the college game "a little more true" than it used to be. I was very fortunate to never have a ball hit me while I was pitching. Came close ALOT of times and trust me, it was pretty scary facing some of the hitters in college.

/\ So true, Mainstreet. ASU baseball should always be contending for a National Championship. There is so much tradition here and it all started from the Winkles/Brock era. What is crazy is there has only been 4 different coaches in ASU baseball history (well 5 now)- Winkles, Brock, Murphy, Esmay and now Smith. With all those years of baseball, sure seems like there would be more coaches.

Murphy has a put and still has a ton of players in the MLB. He can get guys to the next level. He was a huge help in Pedroia career. Murph took a chance on a 5'6 kid from California that no one else gave a shot. Obviously we know how it turned out. i personally would love to see Murphy back in college baseball.

I'm not sure about the whole story about Murphy leaving. In any regard, he recruited well and always seemed to have the Sun Devils in contention. The only thing that bothered me is that Murphy could not deliver a Championship to the Suns Devils. Of course I was spoiled by Bobby Winkles and then later, Jim Brock. I guess those days are gone forever.
