The changing look to the Suns bench has begun with the coaches.
Former NBA head coach Alvin Gentry will join Marc Iavaroni and Phil Weber as assistants on Mike D'Antoni's staff next season.
It is unlikely that assistant Tim Grgurich, who was working on a year-to-year basis, will return after two seasons in Phoenix. He has not been involved in off-season work.
Gentry spent last season as the lead assistant in New Orleans under Tim Floyd, who was fired May 7. Gentry will arrive in Phoenix early this week.
Phoenix had not added a staff member since D'Antoni's promotion from assistant to head coach in December.
"He brings a tremendous amount of experience at both the head coach and assistant coach level," said Bryan Colangelo, Suns president and general manager. "He's always been a well-respected individual in the league."
Gentry has been a head coach for three NBA teams. Most recently, he led the Los Angeles Clippers from 2000 to 2003 (89-133) and coaxed a 39-win season out of the lottery regulars in 2001-02.
He also headed up the Pistons when he took over for Doug Collins in the middle of the 1997-98 season and was fired during two seasons later. He was 73-72 in Detroit, including a 1999 playoff trip.
He served as Miami's interim coach for 36 games (15-21) in 1995. He also has assisted 829 NBA games with San Antonio, the Clippers, Miami, Detroit and New Orleans.
"I think a lot of positive things are going on right now with the Suns," Gentry told the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
I thought Tim was one of the best assistants in the league, well respected and the master of working with young players.
