It looks like any chance the Suns had of getting the Timberwolves first round draft pick in the 2015 draft has gone by the wayside as they likely enter rebuild mode. See link below from a RealGM article.

So now, as I understand it, the Suns will be getting the Timberwolves second round draft picks in 2016 and 2017. I was hoping the second round picks will start conveying in the 2015 draft. Anyone understand it differently?

Oh, the moment Love left, that first round pick was gone. Second round picks are fairly useless, unless you draft and stash in Europe for a couple of years.

It doesn't bother me that much though- the Suns have no use for a mid-first round pick. They have plenty of young talent that you can get in that range. What they really need is a top-five pick or something similar.

I was hoping the Suns would get the Wolves' 2015 and 2016 second round picks which would be fairly early in the second round. However, the link above indicates the second round picks would be conveyed in 2016 and 2017. Whoever accepted those stipulations on the Wolves first round pick was simply not being realistic or serious about getting a first round pick.

To be fair we got that pick for a FA (Lopez) and Wesley Johnson.

We weren't in position to demand a lot more for players like that.

Without digging deeper into the matter, I think the first round pick the Suns received was a pick that was passed on. Whoever originally allowed the Wolves to downgrade a first round pick into second round picks set a bad example. I've never heard of it done before or after.
