I believe his 2020 cap hit is nearly the same as his dead number hit would be. So you could pay him 15m to go away or pay him 15m to play like crap and hurt the team... It’s a bad look either way.

2020 salary is already guaranteed so unless you can't even use him as a #3 or special packages and consider him a total waste of a roster spot then it would be beyond silly to cut him. The only argument that makes sense is if there are PS players out there who with zero doubt are better than DJ. Even then a GM isn't going to throw away the money on a slight chance he can look like the RB who played into that big contract.

Cost to waste a roster spot on DJ in 2020: $14,250,000
Cost to have a free spot and cut DJ in 2020: $16,200,000

It would hurt, but maybe it would be good to lockup some money for the next GM. Dead Cap didn’t save Rosen, Bradford, or Glennon

I guess the key thing is how he will react if he’s demoted to third string. Will he be a team player or a cancer

The thing is that he has been somewhat productive THIS year...just not really on the ground. But even then the numbers actually don't look so bad.

He has been over 100 scrimmage yards in 4 of 6 games hes played in while healthy...and has looked decent on the ground in 2 (when he got more carries).

He is not a waste of a roster spot...that is just factually incorrect. He is certainly not living up to his contract, but to say that a healthy DJ isn't an offense player we want on the field in 2020 is wrong.

I wish we could trade him, but it won't happen at this point. The best case scenario is that he sits down until 100% healthy and comes back next year as a solid player.

What do you mean lockup money for the next GM? The cap is already baked regardless if he is cut or plays.

Rosens $8m dead cap netted a 2nd round pick. Glennon cost only $3M, Bradford was $5m.

Those were bad moves no doubt but consider we were hedging to have a serviceable player at the single most important position on the team. If anyone thinks we are going pay an extra $2m in dead cap against the 2020 cap on top of $14m to free up a roster spot for a UDFA, unless DJ goes full on AB on us, I have a bridge for sale.

We have Zenner on our roster as a 4th string back. He's touched the ball 5 times in 3 games. We won't be carrying a 4th back, but you would rather see Zenner as our #3 over DJ?

DJ is going to have a lot of trouble not being #1.

I read a lot of "move him to WR" comments. David is a tweener. He can't get separation on cornerbacks. His bread and butter has been eating Linebackers alive. When he was a threat to run for big gains on corners or catch on linebackers he was elite. Now he's a runningback that can't run.

DJ is horrible at blocking. Do some google searches, he used to be in Arians dog house about it. Just today Kent Summers notes:
"In the first quarter, Kingsbury played Johnson and Drake together at times, including on first down from the Buccaneers’ 42.

On that play, Johnson moved to the right side at the snap of the ball, apparently trying to draw attention that way. It appears his assignment was to block linebacker Shaquil Barrett.

Drake took the handoff and gained 4 yards. But the gain could have been double that had Johnson decided to either hit, or get in the way of, Barrett.

Johnson didn’t and Barrett made the tackle."
He's not going to do well with Drake on the field or as a "tight end" if he can't or won't block.

If Zenner will actually try. Yes.

Keep in mind there are other options as well. When the Jet's traded Williams they paid part of his salary. Perhaps. Also depending when DJ gets cut or traded some of the hit can be moved to 2021.

He looks slow and non aggressive. Is his back or ankle still less than 100%. If he is still the same after the bye week, I think he will be a situational player from here on out.

as a guy advocating a few years ago to extend him ..... ugh

now i am seeing what the dead money hit is if they cut him.

they have to keep him next year, but can move on after that

He said he was 100% before the game. He had a lot of time to get better. He has to show up for us to W.

Behind you
He got the ball 5 times yesterday and he gained 2 yards total

Dude has mailed it in for years

Nice to see some of you have WOKEN up to the bum he's become

He has NO heart on the field, he runs timid, what happened to his speed and more

It's as if he quit the second the contract ink was dry...'take my money and go'

While he has a huge money cap hit of $10 mill next year...you gotta ask why other than the contract do you keep him. He's provided NO assistance to the offense at all.

Can you really afford to keep handing him the ball during games hoping he will turn back into his old self.....wasting plays during games is NEVER a good idea.

The evaluation I have for DJ for the past 3 years and especially this year:

DISAPPOINTING

5 attempts for 2 yards

previous game 1 attempt 2 yards

game before that 12 attempts for 24 yards

Drake is the better RB option

depth. Still a very good receiver out of the backfield

the issue is that he is a mismatch in the passing game only to the extent that defenses consider him a credible running threat

He looks so bad, if I were Kiem, I would sit him down and tell him to retire.

If he gets pissed, who cares? He cannot play any more poorly than he has.

If he could block, he could be salvaged, but he doesn't want any contact in a contact sport.

He has his millions, he will be out of the league soon enough.

I would cut him in the offseason, dead money be damned.

The OL run faster than him. It’s on thing to set up your blocking but at least get to he edge quicker

Someone quote tweeted this and said that he thought Jerome Bettis retired..... Apparently, he was wrong.

Made me laugh.

take this FWIW:

i listen to the Cardinal podcast content ( Red Sea report, CArds Underground, etc) and caught up to the last Red Sea with Jurecki, Bert Berry and Craig Grialou.

Bertrand Berry basically called DJ out for having hurt feelings and running to avoid contact. Predicted that when Chase comes back, DJ may not dress. Jurecki was saying DJ is tip toeing to the line.

i post not because the observations are news, but that Cardinal employees are questioning a players commitment. That part is news.

Tip toeing? Dudes robbing the organization of their money while he only performs at about 60% true effort. Give my Chase and Kenyon please.

0 touches for a healthy David Johnson today. Clear sign he's on his way out.

Question is how bad its going to hurt...

Cutting DJ

By just wasting a roster spot DJ earns $14,250,000 in 2020

2020 Pre-6/1 Release

2020 Dead Cap: $16,200,000 ( $-1,950,000 difference)

2020 Post-6/1 Release

2020 Dead Cap: $13,200,000 ($3,000,000 difference, but not until June 2)
2021 Dead Cap: $3,000,000

2021 Pre-6/1 Release

2021 Dead Cap: $3,000,000 ($9,000,000 difference from his $12,000,000 salary that year)

Trading DJ

Assuming a 2020 trade, the other team would take on this salary:

2020 for other team: $11,250,000 (fully guaranteed now as of 3/15/2019)

2021 for other team: $9,000,000 ($2.1M of 2021 salary fully guarantees on 3/20/2020)

Every year of the contract there are $1.05 million in roster bonuses tied to being active, and some potential incentives

Pre-6/1 Trade

2020 Dead Cap: $6,000,000 (A $8,250,000 difference)

Post-6/1 Trade
2020 Dead Cap: $3,000,000 ($11,250,000 difference, but not until June 2)
2021 Dead Cap: $3,000,000

Sooooooo….. being the other team gets royally screwed the cards will have to pull a Leonard Williams and include money in the trade to be rid of DJ. This will significantly impact any savings as that is instant dead money. If DJ continues to suck, you may even have to include a pick to get rid of him.

It's not impossible, but will hurt no matter what. Basically your just trying to contain the damage Kiem did. You will not come up on this, just simply try to avoid a full 16 mil hit.

Cards are gonna have to package a pick or 2 in any trade...like a 2 and a 5. Kinda like Houston did with ASU QB to the Browns.

You have to try really hard to piss of Kliff Kingsbury. I assume that players didn’t appreciate David Johnson’s historic lack of effort

Just keep him for 1 more year. Last chance saloon but he’s the RB 2/3 and gets involved in the passing game. We don’t need that dead cap money eating into our FAs we desperately need
