Every decent West team except for the Lakers have made a trade or at least involved talks for a trade....Suns stand PAT.

Shows you the difference between an awful management and well run management.
We got rid of E-doh! and brought in Gortat at the same time. Season saving trade.

I continue to be mystified by the persistent fantasy that Smith is available for cheap. Where did this come from, and how does it survive?
Porbably because ATL already has expensive players like Johson and Horford on the team along with the recently traded for Kirk Hinrich who is fairly expensive at $9 mil a year. Not to mention they have been unsuccessful trying to trade the very overpaid Marvin Williams.

Probably not for very cheap but if we can throw Dragic, Lopez, Carter, 1st rd pick for him, Teague and Pachulia they might do the trade or at least give it strong consideration.

Josh Smith looks like he has fallen in love with the outside shot in the first half against the Suns. He is not looking like the type PF the Suns need. Millsap may not have Smith's height but I would take him any day over Smith.

Here is why I believe Smith is inevitable trade bait in ATL. They are looking for a C. Horford is playing C but he is really a pf and makes sure everyone knows it. ATL does NOT want to play Smith at SF. They do not believe that is his natural position. So, you have two starting pf's and Horford will be the guy they keep.

Lopez is looking pretty good tonight. ;) Wonder if they are paying attention.

The only likely way to get Josh Smith is to take on Marvin Williams bad contract without trading them one in return (so no Warrick, Childress).

So a deal would likely include Carter (obviously), Pietrus as his contract isn't that bad, a young cheap player like Lopez or Dragic, and draft picks. More than likely a 3rd team would have to be involved like say Denver.

They want out of Williams contract badly because they want to sign Crawford to an extension. Since they are in a position of power with Smith being under contract another few years, you have to get them motivated in other ways like taking back a bad contract.

With us likely trading Carter in the deal, we would likely have to anyways to make salaries match.

Leaving money out of the equation, I wonder how Atlanta feels about Childress. He played well for them.

Leaves us with so many forwards and so few guards. Can't you sub Warrick for Pietrus in that trade.

Not likely unless you want to add another piece like Dragic and get another bad contract in return. You have to keep the motivation of all 3 teams involved in mind. In this case its the Nuggets want to rebuild so they would be willing to do this deal if they get expiring (Carter), near expiring deals (Pietrus), young cheap players (Lopez and in my scenario Teague) and draft picks.

They really have no need for Warrick.

IMO Childress playing the 2 for brief periods of time wouldn't be that big of a deal so it would be fine.

Do you guys think if we trade for Josh Smith, we'll have a decent shot at getting Chris Paul or Deron Williams in 2012?

Paul may realize that neither Amare nor Melo can share the ball like the Miami superstars can so he could look for different options.

Deron Williams will probably sign an extension with NJ but what if....

We are NOT trading for Josh Smith! Won't happen. Especially after tonight, Marvin Williams is the guy they want to trade.

They might trade Smith in the offseason or next season as they'll have trouble shortly keeping him due to the contracts they gave Horford and Joe Johnson. However I agree they won't trade him now.

Williams contract is awful and unlikely to be moved unless they give another good piece in return like Smith. Its like how we're stuck with Warrick and Childress's contracts

If their so desperate to trade Marvin Williams, then they would do this trade if offered.

Williams, J-Smoove, & Crawford for 1st rd pick, $4 million cash, Carter, Warrick, Pietrus & Lopez

They get rid of 3 of their 5 most expensive players. Gets an expiring contract in Carter...gets a 1st rd draft pick....gets a backup PF (something they don't have)...gets Pietrus who will be MAJOR help in the playoffs with his toughness & defense...get a center who has incredible potential and allows them to move Horford to PF.

Also gives them $$$ flexibility to go after Dwight Howard or something in the free agency of 2012.

I'm not sure about those 2 specifically but it does make us a more attractive location for FAs

They don't want to give up Crawford. In fact, they're trying to get space in order to keep him.

I doubt they take Warrick back either. This is likely to happen in the offseason anyways as VC gives them instant cap savings to keep Crawford

They can get Crawford in free agency if they want him back so badly. We give them Pietrus who is a much better defender than Crawford. Hinrich can probably make up for his offense. Also Carter has played well in the playoffs before so that can help em too.

Warrick actually doesnt have that bad a contract. $4 million over 3 years isnt that bad. His contract is way better than Marvin Williams...thats for sure. Besides they need a backup PF cause they have no backup PF.

I doubt they'd get a better offer for Marvin Williams.

True they could get Crawford back but they could only offer the MLE as they're over the cap and have lost his Bird Rights. The other option would be a sign-and-trade but that kinda defeats the whole purpose as they'd have to give up picks to get him back.

Warrick's contract is better, I'll give you that but we'd have to add extra incentive in order for them to take it (ie both 1st rounders this year or a 1st this year and one in the future or all of the above). In this case, they'd need a SF as we've taken both of there's away.

The problem is that the Hawks are negotiating from a position of strength so we have to sway them. Honestly if you were the Hawks GM, would you do that trade?
