Johnstown Tomahawks coach-General Manager Jared Kersner is serving a team-implemented 10-day suspension due to “an internal staff issue,” both Tomahawks majority owner John Koufis and Kersner confirmed Saturday.

“This is an internal staff issue that has been addressed,” Koufis told The Tribune-Democrat Saturday. “Coach was issued a 10-day suspension tied to the resolution of the matter. We are viewing this as a bump in the road.

“Nothing has changed from the vision of the players, community and logo being at the forefront of everything we do. The team and all Tomahawks staff remain jointly committed to that vision. There will be no further comments on the matter at this time.”

Avakyan, Tomahawks complete sweep of Hat Tricks with shutout

Nick Jarmain and Charlie Zetterkvist each scored, while Nick Avakyan made 43 saves to post his first shutout as the Johnstown Tomahawks blanked the Danbury Hat Tricks 2-0 Saturday night inside Danbury Ice Arena.

Assistant coach Alec Freyberger and goaltenders coach Nick Mish led the team to a 4-2 victory at Danbury, Connecticut on Friday. The assistants will continue to coach the Tomahawks, including during Saturday’s second game against Danbury, until the suspension concludes, Koufis said.

Koufis didn’t specify when the 10-day suspension began or will conclude.

The Tomahawks play road games against the New Jersey Titans March 21-22.

Fifth-place Johnstown (27-20-5) trails fourth-place New Jersey (27-18-6) by one point (60-59) in the East Division standings entering Saturday’s action.

Reached Saturday afternoon, Kersner referred to Koufis’ statement and declined to comment further on his suspension or the circumstances that led to it.

The coach-GM did praise his players' effort and focus.

“The team is doing great. We played great Friday and won 4-2,” Kersner said. “We’ve been grinding and practicing since Day 1. The players know what they’re doing.

“The game is for the players. Moving forward, everything is the same. The team is going to be fine. We’re all aligned with our vision, moving forward.”
