The NFL announced the performance-based pay bonuses for the 2024 season this week. It proved to be a lucrative day for many Detroit Lions players, most notably safety Kerby Joseph.

Joseph pocketed just under $1 million in performance-based pay, ranking in the top 10 in the league. The bonuses are a system to reward players with low base salaries to receive extra compensation for snaps during the regular season. Every Lions player who appeared in one of the 17 regular-season games received something. These 10 Lions topped the performance-based pay bonus list for Detroit:

Kerby Joseph, $996,252.68

Brian Branch, $597,085.44

Trevor Nowaske, $591,735.40

Sam LaPorta, $507,106.17

Ben Niemann, $476,355.10

Brock Wright, $459,470.33

Malcolm Rodriguez, $443,186.18

Dan Skipper, $424,615.31

Kindle Vildor, $409,335.83

Pat O'Connor, $398,112.56

How does the NFL calculate it all? From the NFL Operations explanation,

Performance-Based Pay is computed by using a player index (“Index”). To calculate the Index, a player’s “PBP Playtime” (defined as the player’s regular season total plays played on offense, defense and special teams, divided by the number of plays in which the player with the most total combined plays participated on that team) is divided by his “PBP Compensation” (defined as each player’s regular season full salary, including his prorated portion of signing bonus, and earned incentives). Each player’s Index is then compared to those of all other players on his team to determine the amount of his Performance-Based Pay.
