Top 2007 Free Agent Offensive Linemen
By: Greg Davis
QB | RB | WR | OL | DL | LB | DB | K

Max Starks RFA Pittsburgh Steelers
Starks is a starting tackle for a Super Bowl champion. That’s enough in itself to get some teams a little excited about the prospects of acquiring him. The fact that Starks is young, talented, and massive in stature—listed at 6’8”, 337 lbs.—just adds to the excitement pile. Another lineman that shouldn’t be going anywhere as the Steelers will not let Starks go without a fight. The best bet is that Starks will decide he wants to stay in Pittsburgh and sign an extension. If he hits the market, there will be a team or two willing to pay a big amount to entice the tackle to relocate.

Leonard Davis UFA Arizona Cardinals
Davis is a massive tackle that the Cardinals can’t afford to lose to free agency. The Arizona offensive line is already suspect, and losing Davis would be a huge step in the wrong direction, but the team may have to let him go and find a replacement if they aren’t prepared to offer decent money. Davis has shown the ability to simply be a wall of protection for his quarterback and while teams might not line up for the chance to sign him, anyone looking for a tackle will have him high on the list. The Cardinals are more than likely going to push to re-sign him before he hits the market.

Mike Gandy, UFA, Buffalo Bills
A relatively young starting left tackle, Gandy had been blocking for Willis McGahee over the past two seasons, and this season could go a long way in making Gandy an appealing free agent. He has talent, but isn’t considered among the league’s best linemen. However, a decent starting left tackle doesn’t just drop from the sky, so expect him to garner interest from a handful of teams, if Buffalo doesn’t re-sign him before the market opens.

Other Free Agent Offensive Linemen
Jordan Black, UFA, Kansas City Chiefs
Dwayne Carswell, UFA, Denver Broncos
Derrick Dockery, UFA, Washington Redskins
Nat Dorsey, RFA, Cleveland Browns
Chris Gray, UFA, Seattle Seahawks
Norm Katnik, RFA, New York Jets
Ryan Lilja, RFA, Indianapolis Colts
Sean Locklear, RFA, Seattle Seahawks
Vincent Manuwai, UFA, Jacksonville Jaguars
Roman Oben, UFA, San Diego Chargers
Brian Rimpf, RFA, Baltimore Ravens
Eric Steinbach, UFA, Cincinnati Bengals
Todd Steussie, UFA, St. Louis Rams
Floyd Womack, UFA, Seattle Seahawks

I think Carswell is already available- he was cut right before the season - don't know if he resigned or not.

I think he's either retired or is about to, he came back from a serious car accident and they basically told him this camp he just couldn't physically do it anymore.

Does that site have incomplete data? Out of the 9 free agent QBs they list, two of them are Rohan Davey and John Navarre. The depth of the other positions are almost as bad. Nate Clements is probably going to be franchised so I doubt the Cardinals will get any DB help via FA next offseason.

Not incomplete at all.

Just goes to show just how bad the Free agent market will be next year. Compounding that will be the taking away of the players that will be franchised, re-signed during the season, and a bump in camp space from 102 to 109 Mill. Which makes the 40+ Mill we will have in cap space not look like all that big a deal becuase there is no one to sign with that money.

The only real way to actually spend that money next year will be to trade, make RFA offers (which means losing draft picks), trade up in draft, and sign one of the few good UFA's to a crazy amount of money.

Also, those who are looking at Max Starks on that list. Dont get your hopes up. He is a RFA and Pitt will withot question give him at minimum the Mid tender which means signing him will come at a cost of a first rounder. And I wouldnt be surprised if Pitt gave him the high tender offer which means a cost of a 1st and 3rd rounder.

As for the list. The only players that catch my eye that dont suck, are really old, or a RFA are - Vincent Manuwai and Eric Steinbach.

That's pretty neat if you're an owner, you just shrug and go, look.... look, nothing we can do and pocket insane profits.

I'm not bashing ownership really, it's just probably how it's going to go down, unless we restructure or bonus the entire "core" we're going to have a hard time getting rid of the money.

Personally in that enviroment you might want to forget it and just keep the picks and draft O linemen with them.

What we should do is to sign Big to a nice long reasonable contract soon and trade him for picks, that would be an excellent idea, but first we have to make sure we can get him playing decent or we'll get no takers.

I think you should figure out what is going to be the deepest FA pool position and just load up on it just go insane on LB's or DE's or whatever you can get and trade some players out if you get to many, can you do that?

The problem is most of these guys won't hit the market because teams have SO much cap room because of the new CBA that they can afford to resign young talent, even at higher prices. Big hits the market and he makes 8-10 mil a year. Teams just have that much cap space to throw around. Gil Brandt even did a story a while ago about how it is a bad time to be a bad team because other teams can now afford to pay young talent about to become UFAs and add to the continuity on their team. I highly suggest we do the same. Now is not the time to start jettisoning players. If you think Big is that bad, move him to the right side and draft/sign a legit LT, but don't let him leave.

I agree, pay him LT money and move him to guard, don't tell him you're going to do that just do it.

He's a awe inspiring guard, why bother with how much he gets paid? We're going to have more money than good players to spend it on so just do it and be done with it IMO.

Starks is my boy and he is frickin awesome RT. The best guys on the list are Dockery and Steinbach, either would be a nice pick-up for LG.

I beleive that this is the year that Cardinals really evaluate LD as a LT and compare him to others at the same position. When I think of Davis as a LT I honestly can't get past the false starts and the rediculous whiffs. It is not that I don't think that he is capable as a LT, I just don't know how he compares to the rest in the league. If you truley believe that he is top 10, then you have to leave him at LT. If he isn't, then pay him a Hutchison contract and put him at LG because, like it or not, he is our best lineman and our team is better with him on it than not. Now this would make the Duece pick last year a head scratcher, but he might be able to switch sides and compete with Milford Brown. Ideally, we could draft a LT and put him behind Wells to learn since this seems to be a deep year for offensive linemen coming out of college and hopefully we will be drafting at worst in the late teens.

Some things;

1. NEZ is right, it's way to early for this.
2. Many of these guys will never make it to FA.
3. Some guys will already have their heart set on playing somewhere else.
4. Many teams will have plenty of money to spend on a relatively-weak FA class.

What is that? A star fish? A pretzel? The Cardinals offensive line is a huge star fish?

Could we get some logic in this thread?

Starks is a typical run-blocking RT very much like Big - Big is only stuck on the left side, where his weaknesses are exposed. As players they are very similar.

I agree, Starks would an awesome addition this season! BUT next season when Leinart takes over LT suddenly becomes the frontside tackle, and RT becomes the blindside. I'll garantee that Starks would struggle big time as the blindside T AND that Big will look much better when not isolated on the blindside.

CD:

That's the ticket. Make the OL a priority in the draft, develop your draftees (i.e., determine their best positions, leave them there, and coach the hell out of 'em), and lock up the best of them long-term.

Free agency is a quick ticket to either filling your roster with other teams' castoffs, overpaying for top talent, or both. Fine for targeted acquisitions, but no way to build a team.

The genius of Denny Green. He knew that the Cards were going to get the left handed Leinart so he moved LD to LT where his RT skills would be ready for the Cards new Hollywood offense.
