There were passionate celebrations from Ange Postecoglou and his coaching staff - Getty Images/Alex Grimm

It felt like Ange Postecoglou could even be out of a job before Easter was over had Tottenham Hotspur exited the Europa League.

Instead the head coach and Tottenham fight on – after an impressively battling performance (maybe a rarity in Postecoglou’s reign) – as they reached their first semi-final in this competition, then the Uefa Cup, since 1984.

Whether even winning this competition, and earning a precious Champions League place, with the finance that brings, can save Postecoglou remains in severe doubt. Maybe the die is already cast on his future given their wretchedness in the Premier League.

But had Spurs lost to Eintracht Frankfurt Postecoglou may well not have been in the dug-out for Monday’s next league encounter, at home to Nottingham Forest, such was the mood. Their season would have been over and, so, it could be argued there was little reason for carrying on given how beleaguered he has become.

But in winning, and keeping a clean sheet, Spurs have also kept alive the Australian’s much-derided declaration that he always claims a trophy in his second season at a club. That promise is one he can still keep, whatever then happens.

The Frankfurt fans were relentless. Postecoglou will hope he has silenced some of the noise around him and he looked like a man, on the touchline, who knew what was at stake. On the final whistle all his coaches jumped on him for a group hug with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario sprinting to join in.

"A fightback in Frankfurt that will go down in folklore!"

They went close again. Frankfurt were certainly vulnerable from set-pieces and this time Rodrigo Bentancur met another corner only to head wastefully over.

Finally Frankfurt went close with Chaibi forcing a fine instinctive save by Vicario with his outstretched leg before Rasmus Kristensen headed across goal and close to the post. Kristensen then missed a glorious chance as the ball fell to him and he fired woefully wide. What a let-off for Spurs. Incredibly a third opportunity dropped to the Leeds United loanee, in the week that a permanent deal has been agreed, and this time he miscued.

Having ridden his luck, Postecoglou had seen enough. He withdrew Johnson and brought on a third centre-half, Kevin Danso. He had to try and shore things up as it was all becoming too chaotic and far too frantic. The control that Spurs had was gone. The tension grew. But they deservedly held on.

Dominic Solanke speaking to TNT Sports

“We knew it would be difficult. They are a top side but we got the job done. We want to play in big games and we are looking forward to it.”

On his penalty:

“It was always going to be a penalty, no idea why it took so long. We managed to get the goal from it. We have been looking forward to it all season. We want to win the thing and hopefully we can do it.”

On easing the pressure on Ange Postecoglou:

“Of course. We have not had the best of seasons in the Premier League and ultimately we want to win trophies. We have a good chance to do that.”

Tottenham take a little while to clear as the ball is inside their own box but they manage to clear and take the ball down the field.

10:00 PM BST

90+6 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

Romero is booked for a nasty sliding challenge that was late. The latest of free-kicks for the hosts and their keeper Santos is up for it...

09:59 PM BST

90+5 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

It is kicking off as Frankfurt feel like Tottenham are deliberately wasting time and Theate is booked for trying to pick up Romero as he was being treated by the medical staff. We will go a few minutes now beyond the initial five minutes added on.

Theate’s cross is deflected behind for a corner...

09:55 PM BST

90+1 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

Solanke and Santos collide as the latter was punching the ball away inside the Frankfurt box. He needed to be careful there but was just about ok and got the ball so no penalty there.

09:53 PM BST

90 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

Sarr heads behind for a Frankfurt corner. Chaibi sends it in but Solanke heads away.

There will be five added minutes. Will Tottenham cling on and book their place in the semi-finals?

09:51 PM BST

87 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

Frankfurt win themselves a corner out on the left and Tottenham are very much clinging on. Ekitike is found at the back post and he heads back across goal. His header cannot be diverted in by any of his teammates and it goes just wide of the far post.

09:49 PM BST

86 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

Tottenham are holding on now and counting down the minutes.

09:48 PM BST

84 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

A defensive change from Ange Postecoglou as Danso is coming on for Johnson.

09:47 PM BST

83 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

Another chance falls to Kristensen. After Romero blocks an effort, the ball comes to Kristensen, but his effort is tame and again he should have done so much better.

09:47 PM BST

82 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

That should have been the equaliser for the hosts. The ball comes across from the left-hand side of the box and takes a touch off Ekitike. It rolls to the feet of Kristensen in space on the right-hand side of the penalty area. He should score but his first-time effort goes wide of the far post. He should have buried that chance.

09:43 PM BST

80 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

The ball is sent into the Tottenham box and Wahi heads on but his effort lacks power and it is an easy save for Vicario. The offside flag goes up anyway. It was very close but probably just offside.

09:42 PM BST

Tottenham are making a change now as Tel is replaced by Sarr.

Double change for the hosts as Wahi and Knauff replace Larsson and Brown.

09:39 PM BST

76 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

Great save from Vicario. Kristensen plays the ball across from the right-hand side of the box, which Chaibi flicks on, forcing Vicario into a great save.

Moments later Kristensen heads across goal and his header nearly finds its way into the far corner but goes just wide.

09:37 PM BST

74 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

Frankfurt give the ball away inside their own half and Tottenham move towards the hosts’ box. Johnson feeds it out to Solanke on the right-hand side of the box but the latter’s shot is blocked.

09:34 PM BST

70 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

Ekitike goes down inside the Tottenham penalty area and the home players and fans are pleading for a penalty. The referee waves those appeals away.

Down the other end Tel plays a great cross towards the far post that nearly picks out Johnson but again is diverted behind.

Looking at the replays that is not going to be overturned. Not a penalty as Romero did get some of the ball as he tried to clear the ball and not much of Ekitike. There were also some appeals for handball but it came off Romero’s shoulder in the process of clearing the ball. VAR has checked it and rightly cleared the incident.

The corner comes to nothing.

Tottenham come very close to adding their second of the night. Udogie plays a delightful, flat ball across the penalty area and Johnson looks certain to tap it home at the back post but Theate steps in with a crucial intervention and diverts it behind for a corner.

Bentancur is found from the delivery but he heads his effort just over. He should be hitting the target there.

Tottenham counter through Kulusevski down their right. The visitors end up winning themselves a corner after Porro’s cross was blocked behind. Porro sends in an outswinger, which Koch heads away. Tottenham keep it alive and the move ends with Tel taking on a shot from near the edge of the box. He cut onto his right foot and tried to curl one into the far corner but his effort missed the target.

09:25 PM BST

62 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

Tuta strikes one from range first time but his effort misses the target.

09:25 PM BST

61 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

Kulusevski cuts the ball back to Johnson on the right-hand side of the box. Johnson cannot get his shot away but just about keeps the ball in play. He plays it back to Kulusevski, whose shot is blocked behind for a corner.

The delivery comes in and finds the head of Romero, who should really score from around six yards out but plants his header just wide. That was a big chance for the visitors extend their lead.

09:21 PM BST

58 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

Frankfurt are making a change as one 19-year-old replaces another as Uzun comes on for Bahoya.

09:21 PM BST

Kristensen slides in on Udogie and is booked. He cannot have any complaints about that yellow card and, if Frankfurt do progress tonight, he would miss the first leg of the semi-final.

09:15 PM BST

51 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

It is a fair way out but Chaibi goes for goal. He strikes it well but it goes just wide of Vicario’s right post. Vicario was scampering across his goal and there would have been a moment there where he was panicking.

09:14 PM BST

50 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

The hosts win a corner out on the left after a sliding challenge from Johnson on Theate rolls behind. Frankfurt take it short and then send the ball into the box but Tottenham do well to head away.

Moments later though Frankfurt win a free-kick after a foul from Kulusevski. A chance for the hosts to send it back into the Tottenham box.

Frankfurt have a late corner in this first half as Bergvall puts a cross behind. An inswinger is sent in but Bentancur heads away.

08:48 PM BST

45+2 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

Frankfurt win a free-kick out on the right. Kulusevski is only just on but concedes the foul on Ekitike. The delivery is sent in but Bergvall is on hand to head away.

08:47 PM BST

45 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 1 (1-2 agg)

Tensions are just starting to simmer and things could boil over here. Maddison has gone back down and could still be feeling the after effects of that collision. He is going to be taken off and Kulusevski is replacing him.

There will be six added minutes at the end of this first half.

Should that have been a penalty for Tottenham? The ball is played in behind the Frankfurt defence by Romero and Maddison gets to it first ahead of Santos. Maddison flicks the ball on but is then clattered into by Santos. No penalty is given on the field and the referee is saying it was a coming together. Frankfurt would be very lucky to avoid conceding a penalty here as Maddison clearly got to the ball first and was then wiped out by Santos. That is a very strange call as Maddison was down for some time receiving treatment. This would be very surprising if a penalty is not given.

Surely a penalty?

36 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 0 (1-1 agg)

The stadium announcer has twice now warned the home fans after missiles were thrown at Spurs’ players who were taking corners. First Pedro Porro on the right and then Lucas Bergvall on the left. It has just happened again to Bergvall who has had to kick a couple away before taking the corner.

35 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 0 (1-1 agg)

Udogie’s shot from the edge of the box is blocked and rolls behind for a corner. Maddison is unhappy with his teammate that he did not play the ball to him in space on the left-hand side of the penalty area. It is another decent delivery from Bergvall but Frankfurt manage to clear their lines.

08:34 PM BST

32 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 0 (1-1 agg)

The pressure is just starting to ramp up on Tottenham and the home crowd are still in full voice. But the visitors win themselves a corner out on the left, which Bergvall will take. Some of the home fans are throwing stuff (mainly paper) at the Tottenham players when they take a corner, which the referee really should be doing more to prevent and taking action as that behaviour is unacceptable. Bergvall’s delivery is a decent one and the home side do well to deal with that cross.

08:30 PM BST

29 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 0 (1-1 agg)

A dangerous ball is sent into the Tottenham penalty area from the right but van de Ven does brilliantly under pressure to head away.

08:29 PM BST

28 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 0 (1-1 agg)

From a long-throw in for the home side into the Tottenham box, Bentancur nearly hooks a ball into his own net as he tried to clear. He was losing his footing as he attempted a clearance and the ball nearly ended up in the far corner. Nothing though comes of the corner for the hosts.

08:27 PM BST

25 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 0 (1-1 agg)

Tel shoots from range and forces Santos in a good diving save to his left. The Frenchman struck that well and is denied by a decent save but the visitors will have a corner. Porro sends in an outswinger but Frankfurt head away from danger.

08:26 PM BST

24 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 0 (1-1 agg)

Bahoya sends in a decent cross from the right that finds the head of Chaibi but his effort goes straight at Vicario. Decent opportunity for the hosts there.

That is superb defending from van de Ven. The ball is played in behind the Tottenham defence directly from the Frankfurt keeper Santos. Ekitike runs onto the end of it and takes a decent first touch into the box. Van de Ven though slides in at just the vital moment and nicks the ball away from Ekitike just as the Frankfurt striker was about to shoot. He denied a probable goal there.

The rain is still teaming down in Frankfurt but that has not dampened the spirits of the home fans, who are up for this one.

Play is stopped as Solanke and Koch come together, with the latter coming off worse. No foul from Solanke but still a painful one for the former Leeds man.

08:06 PM BST

5 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 0 (1-1 agg)

Frankfurt win a free-kick on the left and send it into the Tottenham penalty area. The delivery is pretty good from Gotze and Tottenham do well to head behind for a corner. After a few warnings inside the penalty area, Brown sends in an inswinger, which Tottenham head out of the box. The ball comes to Gotze, who shoots from range, but his effort is straight at Vicario.

08:04 PM BST

3 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 0 (1-1 agg)

The hosts have the first proper chance of the night. Bahoya has an effort first time from the edge of the box but his shot is tame and rolls slowly into the hands of Vicario.

08:03 PM BST

2 mins: Frankfurt 0 Tottenham 0 (1-1 agg)

Ekitike makes a run into the right channel and flicks the ball past van de Ven. The Frankfurt striker goes down wanting a foul to be given but the referee waves those appeals away. Looking at the replays that was the correct call to give no free-kick as there was no foul.

Iraola ready to disappoint Tottenham and stay at Bournemouth

Andoni Iraola is moving towards committing his immediate future at Bournemouth despite being a candidate for clubs such as Tottenham in the event of a change of manager.

Iraola, 42, has one full season left on his contract at the Vitality Stadium and his work on the south coast over the last two campaigns has drawn admirers and has raised the possibility of a move this summer.

But sources are now suggesting the Basque coach is inclined to stay at Bournemouth beyond the current season, with his club firmly in contention for European qualification in 2025-26.

Win or bust?

No-one at Tottenham Hotspur is playing down the importance of this game, especially for Ange Postecoglou. Tottenham faced Eintracht Frankfurt away in a Champions League group game - drawing 0-0 - but this feels far greater. It appears to be win or bust for Postecoglou and, in truth, it would be no surprise if he even goes on and wins the Europa League - and therefore qualifies for the Champions League - and is still sacked. The big question is this: what happens if they lose this evening? Will Postecoglou even be in the dugout for Spurs’ next match, at home to Nottingham Forest on Monday?

“They will feel it tomorrow [tonight]. There are many factors which are important. The key for successwill be that we have a good start into the match, we are right away on the pitch and that we make use of the advantage of playing at home.

“We still know about the quality of Tottenham. Of course I know the results they had recently, but they won also at Manchester United, they won at Man City. These are not little successes. It is quite special to win matches.

“The match from last weekend does not say anything because the only thing where they can reach anything is the Europa League so all their focus is on the Europa League.”

Match preview

Tottenham travel to Germany to take on Eintracht Frankfurt at Deutsche Bank Park in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final with the tie still very much up for grabs at 1-1. Hugo Ekitike gave Frankfurt an early lead in north London last week but Pedro Porro’s goal means it is all square going into tonight. With Ange Postecoglou’s side languishing down in 15th in the Premier League, this is realistically their only hope of European football next season by winning this competition. Postecoglou’s position is coming under scrutiny, especially if Tottenham are knocked out of this competition, but the Australian is focused on tonight’s game, not his own future.

“[My future] is not something I need to think about. What is important is the game on Thursday. I do not really have much of a thought process, that thinks about life or my career in that way, my focus is on getting to the final four of this competition.

“I do not define my career by what people think about me. I do not think that way. I am not a better manager if we win this game, and I am not a worse one if we lose it. There is no burden on me. All I am thinking is we have got a great opportunity, and I am not going to let that slip by without fighting tooth and nail, irrespective of my position.

“I do not see it as salvaging a season. I see it as an opportunity to do something special. Depends on your outlook on life. These opportunities do not come round often, that is the message to the players. Even in good seasons these opportunities do not happen that often, it is a situation that certainly does not happen often to this club.”

Tottenham, who come into tonight’s match off the back of a 4-2 defeat at Wolves in the league last Sunday, will not be able to call upon the services of their captain Heung-min Son, who has not travelled with the squad to Germany due to a foot injury.

“Sonny did not travel in the end, he is the only one that misses out,” said Postecoglou. “He has been battling with his foot problem for a few weeks now and managed [to play] through it. He trained the last few days, he tried to train yesterday and it was not right so we made the decision to leave him at home to allow him to recuperate and see the best mode of recovery for him.”

In between the two legs, tonight’s hosts Frankfurt won 3-0 against Heidenheim in the Bundesliga, where they currently sit third. They won this competition back in 2022, beating Rangers on penalties. Tottenham’s season is hanging by a thread so would defeat tonight spell the beginning of the end for Postecoglou at Tottenham?
