Crawled Through 5 FB Fields
1. RB: Stepfan Taylor or Robert Hughes.
If the Cardinals add a speed RB via waivers or a trade---do they keep Taylor or Hughes?
I would keep Taylor. He's better on STs and showed he can block in pass pro and as a situational FB. Hughes is a better receiver, but we have better receiving options anyway.
2. Swing T: Nate Potter or Bradley Sowell.
There's a chance that the Cardinals will add a tackle via waivers---but---it would be safest to keep Potter or Sowell (or bring back Max Starks) for at least a game or two because they know the offense and a newcomer wouldn't.
This is a difficult choice---which may be made easier due to the fact that Potter slightly separated his shoulder Thursday night. However, seeing as Potter's injury was not severe, I think Potter is the better athlete and has played better than Sowell, so I give the nod to Potter.
3. #5 DE: Ed Stinson or Bruce Gaston.
Had the Cardinals not picked up Tommy Kelly, chances are both Stinson and Gaston would make the roster. But, seeing as Kelly seems assured of a roster spot, the coaches have to make a choice here.
To me this one is easy. Gaston has had one of the best camps of all the defensive linemen---and had 6 tackles versus the Chargers. I think that because Stinson is a smaller than usual interior lineman, he is not going to get claimed by another team and thus could be kept on the PS.
4. #4 ILB: Desmond Bishop or Glenn Carson.
It could be that the Cardinals won't keep either if they add another ILB via waivers or trade...but it could be they like what they have here enough to pass on waived ILBers.
This is the most difficult decision of the all, in my opinion, because Bishop has what the other ILBers lack which is good speed. If Bishop regains his old form at some point this season, he could be a game changer for this defense. Carson, on the other hand, is coming off a 10 tackle, 2 pass deflection game versus the Chargers---but---he has yet to see any action versus starters. Would Carson get claimed off waivers? An ILB needy team like the Bills could very well be interested in Carson---or so could his college coach Bill O'Brien of the Texans.
I think at this point it would be worth it for the Cardinals to find a way to keep both Bishop and Carson---if it means going with 3 RBs or 4 CBs. With Bishop you are gambling on greatness---this guy could be a special fit. And with Carson you are bolstering the STs for now and grooming him to be a factor at ILB for years to come.
Those are my initial thoughts---what are yours?
