I seriously don’t understand why the Packers would trade him he’s a good player

I think he will become a free agent after this season and wanted more $$$ than the Packers were willing to give him.

"Clinton Dix will be a free agent after the season as the Packers picked up his fifth-year option in May. He said earlier this month he didn’t expect to remain with Green Bay."

Probably wasn't going to reup with Packers , so they got something for him.

That’s what “going for it” looks like. Keim should’ve done that when we were good.
What is hilarious is that the Rams trade for these players and can let them leave and they count towards their compensatory pick formula.

It is what they did for Marcus Peters. Rams got Peters and a 6th, and gave up a 4th in 2018 and a 2nd in 2019. However, if they let Peters go in FA they should probably get a compensatory 4th round pick back in 2020.

The Rams will get Fowler for a song, and if they love him, they re-sign him. If not, they let him go and potentially get a mid to late round comp pick back.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this the Patriots' formula.

Yup the compensatory picks change the whole complexion of trading for one-year rentals. It’s a smart strategy.
