Trading back is our only real option

After looking at about every mock draft that has been done on any reputable site, I don't see any player left when we pick in R1 that we couldn't get 5 to 10 picks later, unless of course some stud should fall to us which rarely happens for us. The Steelers are usually the team that is the recipient of that each draft.

I think we are in a good position to get offers though. There will be a couple teams who pass on taking a QB in R1, but will be anxious to move up from early R2 to be sure they aren't left out in the cold.

I think that would be our best case scenario and very likely to happen over some highly rated CB or LB falling to us.

If we don't trade back, the C Ryan Kelly is the only player I can see us taking if he is available.

I think one of the corners could be there. Eli Apple, Mackensie Alexander, William Jackson III should be there and might even go a few picks later if you were willing to roll the dice.

There will be plenty of players available at 29 who can help this team...
partly it depends on what you think the team needs,...and how you value different positions on a team.

personally,...I think what hurt our defense the most last season was not having an explosive big man in the middle who commanded double teams....one such guy could be available at 29....
I also believe...if we plug in said big guy,...what has appeared as a deficiency in our secondary will magically disappear,...as we will not be asking our DB's to cover for five seconds or more...

one also must consider....those who draft QB's in the top ten....do so because they must...not because QB is their only need......also, those who draft behind us in the first have some of the same needs as we do.

also,.. if a team trades to 29 for a QB...they are still going to have to pay that QB at 29 a first round contract.... not too many QB's in this draft worthy of that first round contract.

However, a team that drafts a qb at #29 gets the 5th year contract option which is only available for first round players. That can be worth money for the team.

I think if we can trade back into the top of the 2nd, it wouldn't be a bad option. They were talking today on Sirius about a possible scenario of Dallas trading back into round 1 with a team like us. I wouldn't mind Dallas's 2nd and 4th (or 3rd) for #29.

I see this as a likely draft scenario with a couple of trades, one back from 1st to 2nd round picking up a 3rd, and one using our later picks to move up in the 3rd:

85: R3P22 CB WILL REDMOND

129: R4P30 G SEBASTIAN TRETOLA

171: R5P31 ILB TYLER MATAKEVICH

Best scenario---trading back one or two spots to stay in the 1st round. Having a 5th year option on 1st round draft picks is huge and something you want to take advantage of, especially with players who needs a year or two to develop.

Getting the 5th yr option is nice but not so important IMO. I want us to trade back far enough to get the 2nd rd pick and then a 3rd rd pick.
