:p I was just having fun with Eric as he had corrected another poster. "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone..." and all that.

Fine. We all make mistakes whether it be a typo. an auto-correct or a straight up error. Some of us even intentionally use a non-standard approach at times. For example, I often use both 16 and thirty in the same post when I think it will help make the point whereas in formal writing I would strive for consistency.

But dominate is so often used incorrectly here that I have to wonder how many people truly do understand how to use it. I searched on the word for one regular poster that I knew often mis-used it and discovered more than 40 examples in the last 4 years. It's not unreasonable to think a person like that might want to know the correct way to do it as long as you are reasonable in your approach and IMO, Eric handled it well.

I know you were just having fun so don't think I'm trying to make an issue out of it, just offering a different view. Actually the internets would be a boring place if everyone toed the grammatical line. I ran across something on RealGM about 9 months ago that I've just been looking for an excuse to mention. There was a conversation going on about a specific player and a poster responded with "Stay away from him, he's a Pre-Madonna". I'm still chuckling.

This. Forums are for fun and discussion. It's not grammar school. I generally don't care if someone misspells something if I get the idea they are trying to convey. It's bad form to correct people on forums, text messages and such. Although, it's funny because 99% of the time people who correct other people turn around and make a mistake in short order themselves. LOL. I know it's not personal. Just for fun I did check my own usage and I have misused it before. LOL. Not as often as I have gotten it correct by any stretch. I am sure there are more examples one could point out in my posts using other words. For example I am notorious for your vs you're.

The problem with correcting people in this day and age is you have no clue why that mistake was made. Are they a poor speller? Terrible at grammar? Did they fat finger it? Results of spell check or grammar check? Calling someone out without knowing why is sort of pointless IMO unless as you stated above it's the exact same mistake over and over again. In my job I constantly communicate with Executives and I constantly critique myself. When I get to forums....I just don't have the same level of scrutiny left in me.

Having said that....I have no ill will towards the regulars here. I just enjoy hearing the takes of all the different fans here even when we disagree and get "testy" with each other. I would buy anybody here a beer. Just not all at once. :D

The most humorous corrections are when a poster tells someone "your grammer is bad". They make a spelling mistakes in the process of trying to correct somebody else.

That IS funny. There are some phrases that people have misheard and they don't know the correct phrase. My oldest son, up until he was 17, thought the phrase "playing by ear" was "playing by year". :p

That was my thinking. It's like if your fly is open or you have a booger hanging out of your nose. It's embarrassing to have it pointed out, but in the long run, you'd rather know so you can make the correction.

And you're right about "dominate." The other inexplicable one is "minuets" instead of "minutes." There's at least one poster, and maybe two, who invariably types "minuets." "You keep saying that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

I have no problem calling out a continuing misuse. It helps us all to preserve the language somewhat. I assume you are talking about the verb "dominate" being used in the place of the adj. "dominant" which, for some reason, really annoys me too.

In my case, corrections are welcome. If I am typing with my thumbs, I will ignore.

Maybe they're music fans? :p

While we're on the subject, my two biggest internet pet peeves:

"looses" vs "loses"
and
"to" vs "too"

I have not seen that one much. I think that one fits my point exactly. I seriously doubt people are misusing that one as much as spelling it incorrectly.

Besides, it's only "embarrassing" if you know for a fact that person is simply misusing the word. It's impossible to tell unless they have an auto signature turned on via their mobile device.

For me it's should of, could of and would of. I know that's what it sounds like when spoken but it's pretty basic. It's should have, could have and would have. The other one that bugs me is "anyways". What about that word screams "pluralize me"? Oh well, I don't claim to be perfect. If I had a nickel for every time I've used a run-on sentence I'd have a bunch of nickels.

It's "should've, could've, would've." We all have them. The one that really bothers me is "A whole nother." You hear that one everywhere. "Nother" is not a word.

One that always gets me irked is "I could care less". It seems to be used incorrectly far more often than not. It should be "couldn't care less"! I point this out to people in conversation and they don't believe me, think about the context!

Yep. That one too. Then there are the pronunciation issues. The speech major in me just cringes at such things as "joolery" for "jewelry" and "calvary" for "cavalry."

But the worst one of all is when the President of the United States-the man with his finger on the red button-says "noocyuler" instead of "nuclear."

Haha, my Dad was a pilot in the Air Force for 40 years and he would talk about those "newculyear" bombers. I think it might be a southern thing. He grew up in Kentucky.

Hm, I always thought people were actually saying that various players should be performing more (or fewer) slow, graceful dances. Now it all makes sense. :D

My pet peeves are numerous, but They're, There, and Their are probably at the top of the list. Since I quit smoking and started vaping, seeing "duel" instead of "dual" in the context of dual coils, dual-battery devices, etc really drives me nuts.

Lack of punctuation is another one that drives me crazy. Earlier in my career, one of my peers (Technical Writer) drove me crazy with random capitalization. His sentences Looked something Like this.

For a while there was a fad of random capitalization at about 40% rate - all letters not just initial letters of words. One sentence made your eyes hurt. I'm not typing an example but if you want to punish yourself give it a shot.

Unsubscribing...

Okay, I've thought about this for a couple of days and I'm no closer to understanding your point. Are you upset with the thread hijack? Or are you offering that word up as your pet peeve? If it's the first, I understand and apologize for playing a pivotal role in the hijack. If it's the second option, could you elaborate? Is there a better word to use when you choose to reverse your subscription?

And third, if he is trying to unsubscribe, I don't think that works.
