Ahhhh the microcosm that is sports.
On Monday a team takes 5 out of 6 games including a 3-1 road trip then drops one at home on Wednesday against a solid team and they're imploding.
Football is the worst in this regard since there's a week in between W's and L's.

In case you didn't notice, mine and Chris earlier comments were made before the Rockets games.
It doesn't take a psychic to see that Nash disagrees with his coach on offense. Which is the only thing he has going for him, since he is pretty much useless on the other end of the court, and if you take it away from him, then he is pretty much done as a Suns.
Personally i will wait till after the All-Star game to start bagging on the team and realistically they may not gel till playoff time, so i am not worried about the loss last night, as far as i am concerned it is one more game to learn from but it appears Steve and Raja's patience are waning and their comments obviously indicate they are playing a system they currently have little believe in.

Last night was my first extensive look at this team and I have to tell you....

They are not doing anything this year. In fact they will be lucky to get the #8 seed although we are helped that everyone other then the Lakers in the divsion is garbage.

They are trying to make Shaq the main option which is a terrible idea. In his days of 25 - 12 that would have been a good move but not now.

We all thought Nash made D'Antoni's system....I'm starting to think it was the other way around. Nash looks like a JV PG out there and I don't think its his fault. My biggest concern is.....

Terry Porter.

Wow. Last night was the first time I had heard this guy talk extensively. Are you kidding me? What the hell was that jabber coming out of his mouth? Too bad Shawn was traded as he was likely the only one who could decipher his code.

And his ideas to run the ball through Shaq and force feed slow down/defense just scream "I don't know what the hell I am doing" and am in way over my head. He is taking one of the 10 best players in the league and making him irrelevant.

Hate to say the Suns fans but the sky is falling. I am an optimist but I saw nothing last night to be optimistic about. This team will go 1 -4 there next 5 and will be exposed. That was a mediocre Houston team we lost to last night. Its going to get worse before it gets better.

Bank on it.

In the NBA your record is almost meaningless. It's not about how many you win, but about who you beat and who beats you. Anyone who has been around a while should be concerned with our losses:

New Orleans
Chicago
Houston

We're beating the lottery teams and getting thumped by playoff teams.

It's not like we're losing close games. We are being destroyed by playoff teams.

I hope Porter is trying to implement the set play offense, and is telling them to run that as much as possible now so they will be good at it when we need it later. And, come playoff time, they will be able to run and gun or run set plays with equal proficiency. (Kerr say this is the plan)

What is so hard about adding some set plays for when a quick shot isn't there on offense, and teaching fundamental defense to this team?

BTW Barbosa still plays D'antoni ball and his defense looks much improved to me.

Recently Steve Nash and Raja Bell have both made comments to the media along the lines of the Phoenix Suns being a running team, an idea that seemed to have left with the departure of the “7 Second or Less” run-and-gun offensive mastermind, Mike D’Antoni.

Raja Bell also complained about being discouraged from taking open three point looks, something that coach D’Antoni welcomed with open arms, even with 21 seconds still remaining on the shot clock.

When you shoot 40% or better from 3 and you are being discouraged from taking open looks, your skills are not usful to the plan. Raja can't create his own shot, and is being discouraged from taking the open looks, which are predominantly early in the clock. As the clock winds down the defense can gamble more and overplay guys knowing that a limited number of passes are possible. Guys like Raja, Barnes, LB shoot much better early in the shot clock because they need open looks to make a high percentage. Porters strategy would be better with guys that can create their owns shots without turning the ball over.

I hate to be bitching this early in the season, but last night's game was really frustrating, and hopefully not a sign of things to come. The offense right now is just not working...even against the bad eastern teams it is a struggle.

I just don't understand for the life of me why they would try and change the offense. If it aint broke... It's just a shame that D'Antoni was such a stubborn baby, if he would have spent 15 minutes a practice drilling defensive fundamentals, who knows where the team would be now.

More than anything, it makes me realize how spoiled we were the last few years to watch the 7 seconds or less offense. Nash is pretty much rendered impotent in the current offense, which currently is built around feeding a broken down Shaq in the post while everyone else stands around. This is obviously dumb on so many levels, because no only does it render everyone else worthless, but it is also so short sighted. Shaq has gone from "I am a complimentary piece and just want to fit in" to "give me 16 shots a game, and work from the outside in". This is clearly not a shock to anyone who has followed the career of Shaq; it's what he does.

Amare was clearly not happy after last night's game, and the Suns at this point need to do anything and everything they can to make him happy. If things continue like they are, our best chance of rebuilding for the future is to make sure Amare is locked up long term and to build around him. It just kills me watching the game, and seeing the offense run through Shaq instead of Amare. Amare besides Lebron is the most dominant scorer in basketball, a 60+ percent shooter inside and out who can hit free throws and draw double teams.
Hopefully this game is a wake up call to Kerr and Porter, and they can get their heads out of the asses. This habit of getting blown out by any decent team over the last two years is getting old, and certainly not a good sign for the future.

The current offense is impotent against a good defense. And yes, everyone stands around and doesnt take open shots unless the shot clock is winding down. Funny, that open shots are kinda rare against good teams with the clock winding down.

Last night was just brutal to watch. I understand that the team might be adjusting but man things get harder real quick. So far we have lost to the Hornets & Rockets.

By Dec. 10th. we will have 23 games under our belt and to me adjusting is no longer an excuse.

The next 3 big tests are:

Pistons - Nov 16
Jazz - Nov 17
Lakers - Nov 20.

Then in December, we play the Hornets, Mavs, Jazz and Lakers in a span of just 5 games.

Hornets - Dec 3
Mavs - Dec 4
Jazz - Dec 6
Lakers - Dec 10

We will know what kind of team this is by then, adjusting or no adjusting.

Chris, if the team implodes, as you predict, why is this bad?

We had a change in regime and like every other regime change everywhere in every sport, some of the hold-over players are not buying in to what the new regime of Kerr/Porter is selling.

So the implosion may be inevitable.

Not sure I predicted an implosion, but it wouldn't surprise me. The major problem this year as well as last year is, we can deal with the also rans of the league, but whenever we play a decent team, we lose.

I agree, many of the players are skeptical of the new system but with good reason. If I may make an analogy, one of the biggest reasons the Cards have been successful this year is because Whis has realized where his strength is, the passing game, and has stopped trying to force the running game. Porter keeps preaching a slower game with more of a focus on defense, the problem is we don't have the personnel. We have three players in the starting lineup that are below average defenders, which will always make it difficult to be a decent defensive team.

From watching this team over the last couple years to this year, there is a complete change in offensive philosophy which has really hurt many of the current players. Nash is really underutilized, and the majority of the offense is predicated on dumping it into Shaq, reposting, and then often heaving up a desperation shot, or getting a Shaq flop shot.

Forgetting the boredom factor, it's just not what would be best in the short term or the long term. The Suns are a team built to run, with the personnel to do it. Like I said in my previous post, if it ain't broke, why would you change the offense? The players are clearly dissatisfied, and it's easy to see why, since most of them are just standing there the majority of the time. I remember when we traded for Shaq the comments about "fitting in" and just playing defense and rebounding. As much as I hate to say it, Lakers fans had heard this song and dance before and were right in predicting that he would be demanding his shots eventually. 16 shots a game? There should be only one Sun taking that many shots, and it's not Shaq.

In the short term and the long term, the only player that is irreplaceable is Amare. The team must be built around him now, so he doesn't opt out next year. While Amare is no defensive stalwart, he is about as unstoppable as it gets offensively. If the Suns can find a big man to do the dirty work, play the tough defense and get the rebounds, it will only make Amare better. I've always hoped the Suns could find a way to get a Tyson Chandler type player, he'd be a perfect fit.

When Nash's contract is done, along with Shaq we will have the ability to rebuild, but having said that I think we could still be successful in the short term. We just need to get back to our much higher efficiency offense, for better or for worse, Nash is our Kurt Warner and the straw that stirs the drink. Let him do his thing, have Porter worry about the defense. I am sick of watching final scores in the 80's for the Suns, it's just not Suns basketball. There has to be a happy medium somewhere there...

This team is on the precipe of implosion. Kerr was asked some pretty pointed questions on his radio show this morning. His response was "I know the guys aren't happy, but I wish they would talk to Terry, not the media."

Wasn't that far off after all.
