GLENDALE - Construction could begin within several weeks on the new $355.3 million Arizona Cardinals football stadium after the state Tourism and Sports Authority on Monday approved a major agreement with the builder.
The design-build agreement commits Hunt Construction Group Inc. to deliver the stadium by Aug. 1, 2006, at or below a maximum guaranteed price. The guaranteed price will be set in phases over the next several months, but is not expected to top the ceiling of $355.3 million established by the sports authority.
The agreement will allow the Cardinals to close later this week on the purchase of land at 91st and Maryland avenues, where the venue will be built. The site is just south of the Phoenix Coyotes hockey arena.Upon buying the land, the Cardinals will turn over 25 of the 160 acres to the sports authority for the stadium itself. The rest will be turned over to a community facilities district to use for parking, with a portion doing double duty as youth sports fields and a picnic area.
As soon as the land deal is settled, excavation for the stadium can begin. Substantial excavation is needed because the football field will be below ground level.
Excavation had been expected to begin this month. Authority spokesman Brad Parker predicted heavy equipment will be moving dirt at the site by early July.
Hunt will be paid $15 million as the builder. Direct construction costs will be $250.5 million. Design and pre-construction fees will total roughly $25.7 million.
Hunt also will adopt detailed construction schedules in phases, and is committed to meeting the schedules under terms of the agreement approved Monday. Hunt is subject to penalties if the final construction deadline is not met.
Hunt also will sign a separate agreement with Glendale to build infrastructure and roads at the site.
