STORRS — The UConn women’s basketball team was revealed as a No. 2 seed in the 2025 NCAA Tournament in the Spokane 4 region, with its path to the Final Four running through top seed USC.
The Huskies were the top 2-seed in the selection committee’s final ranking, matching them up with USC as lowest-ranked 1-seed in the bracket. UCLA, headlining the Spokane 1 region, claimed the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament for the first time in program history, and Texas is opposite the Bruins as the 1-seed in Birmingham 3. South Carolina rounds out the 1-seeds leading Birmingham 2.
USC is a familiar opponent for the Huskies, who also had to get through the 1-seed Trojans in the 2024 Elite Eight to reach the Final Four. UConn won last year’s meeting in Portland 80-73 as the 3-seed, but USC redeemed itself with a 72-70 upset of the Huskies in Hartford on Dec. 21 this season. The Trojans enter March Madness after falling 72-67 to UCLA in the Big Ten championship, but they boast one of the most talented rosters in the country with a clear national title ceiling after beating the Bruins twice in the regular season.
USC is anchored by superstar sophomore JuJu Watkins, the favorite to win national player of the year in 2025, and the team added projected top-5 WNBA Draft pick Kiki Iriafen as a transfer from Stanford this year. The Trojans have beaten three top-20 opponents this year, but they aren’t immune to big stumbles with a loss at unranked Iowa and a blowout at home by No. 8 Notre Dame on their resume.
The Huskies will host the first two rounds of the tournament at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, beginning against 15-seed Arkansas State on Saturday. The Red Wolves earned their big by knocking off James Madison to win the Sun Belt Tournament. No. 7 seed Oklahoma State and No. 10 South Dakota State will meet in the first round opposite the Huskies, and UConn will play the winner of that matchup for a berth in the Sweet 16. The other host teams in UConn’s region are 3-seed Oklahoma and 4-seed Kentucky, both out of the SEC.
Fairfield also landed in the Huskies’ Spokane 4 region as the No. 12 seed after the Stags won their second consecutive MAAC tournament, and they will face 5-seed Kansas State in the first round.
UConn is the most decorated program in the history of the NCAA Tournament with 11 national championships including a historic streak of four consecutively from 2012-16. The Huskies have appeared in the Final Four 23 times in 40 seasons under coach Geno Auriemma, and the team has reached at least the Final Four in every NCAA tournament that superstar Paige Bueckers has played in since committing to UConn in 2020. The Huskies have made it to at least the Sweet 16 every year dating back to 1994.
