Mar. 19—Last season Dennis Sanchez got an opportunity to borrow Ousman Jabang for an extended 14-game test run.

Sanchez came away impressed and in the market to buy.

New Mexico United officially acquired Jabang on Wednesday via transfer from MLS club CF Montreal. The 6-foot-2, 23-year-old defensive midfielder is already with his new USL Championship club and will be available for selection Saturday when NMU hosts El Paso Locomotive FC for its home opener.

Sanchez, United's first-year coach, and NMU Sporting Director Itamar Keinan were well aware of Jabang's abilities. Jabang made 14 appearances for USLC club Las Vegas Lights FC last season when Sanchez was coaching the Lights. Jabang appeared in two matches against New Mexico, including a 1-0 playoff victory at Isotopes Park.

CF Montreal will receive an undisclosed transfer fee in return for sending Jabang to New Mexico.

"Ousman is a player that New Mexico United has been monitoring and have had interest in for a long time," Keinan said in a club release. "When the opportunity to bring him in presented itself, we were quick to move, and are excited to have him here. He is a versatile, top-level midfielder, and we are confident that he will achieve big things in Black & Yellow."

Jabang, a native of McDonough, Georgia, was with the Montreal organization since being selected 75th overall in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft. He made five appearances and two starts with the first team over two seasons, also playing in four matches for CF Montreal's U23 club in Ligue 1 Quebec. He signed a three-year contract extension in December.

But Jabang's most extensive professional playing experience came last season, when he played a key role in Las Vegas' first-ever playoff run and three postseason matches. He posted an assist and four chances created in 1,259 minutes for the Lights while contributing 15 interceptions, 66 recoveries with 91% passing accuracy.

Prior to turning professional, Jabang played four seasons at Mercer College, where he tallied nine goals and 14 assists and was an All-Southern Conference First Team selection.
