As had been rumored UNLV hired ex Rebel player and coach Dave Rice as their new head coach for basketball. Rice was an assistant to Dave Rose at BYU and beat out Reggie Theus and several others for the job.

It could have interesting implications in Pac 10 recruiting because Dave Rice's brother is the coach at Bishop Gorman HS in Vegas. Bishop Gorman is loaded with prospects including SG Shabazz Muhammad 2012 SG rated 5th overall in the class and Roscoe Allen a 3 rated a top 25-30 player himself in the class of 2012. Muhammad's younger brother is highly regarded in his class and they have a couple of other kids being recruited too.

UNLV has been on the lists for both Muhammad and Allen but neither was expected to actually go there, Muhammad has UCLA, Kentucky, UNC, Duke, Memphis etc on his list and Allen has Arizona and several other Pac 10 schools high on his list.

It will be interesting to see if Rice getting the UNLV job with his brothers connections is able to get either of those 2 to stay home and play for UNLV?

Definately makes the recruiting more interesting again - could UNLV return to prominence?
